Alex Smith, QB, Washington Redskins
Smith continues to be a highly uninteresting fantasy signal caller, with less than 180 passing yards in three straight games and only one game with more than 250 passing yards and multiple touchdowns all season. Some of that is a product of lack of volume, with more than 35 pass attempts three times in seven games, but the rushing production Smith typically enhances his fantasy value with has mostly gone away too.
But a six-team bye week and a favorable matchup in Week 9 makes Smith hard to ignore. The Atlanta Falcons entered their Week 8 bye allowing the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks (ESPN scoring), along with the fifth-most pass attempts to the position. The Redskins’ defense has played well this season, but this side of the New Orleans Saints (Week 5) the Falcons will be the best offense they’ve faced.
Week 10 brings another nice matchup for Smith. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered Week 8 allowing the most fantasy points to quarterbacks, then Andy Dalton put up 280 yards and two touchdowns against them on Sunday.
For better or worse, and with a banged up group of wide receivers, the shackles will have to come off Smith and the Redskins’ passing game in Week 9 and surely in Week 10 too. He’s in line to be a high-end streamer each week, and for Carson Wentz and Andrew Luck owners in particular he’s a priority streamer for Week 9.
