Elijah Mitchell, RB , San Francisco 49ers
Fellow rookie Trey Sermon was inactive, and Raheem Mostert (knee) was injured early. So Mitchell became something of a last-man standing in the 49ers’ backfield against the Detroit Lions Sunday, and he delivered 104 yards and a touchdown on a clear team-high 19 carries.
It’s too early to know Mostert’s status concretely, but the fact he left Sunday’s game and didn’t return is not a great sign for Week 2. Sermon may be active against the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday then, and JaMycal Hasty scored a touchdown against the Lions.
Kyle Shanahan’s running back deployment is a week-to-week proposition, making Mitchell a possible one-week popup who will fade quickly. But it’s worth speculating on a running back with a pulse in fantasy, and Mitchell had a nose for the end zone in college (37 touchdowns over his last three seasons).
