I have the 3rd pick in a PPR league.  4 pts for a passing TD, 6pt for a rushing and receiving TD.  Obviously if Johnson or Peterson is still available i will roll with them (but they will not be) but if they are gone who would you go with?  I was thinking jone-drew a week ago but the injury talk is making me nervous right now.  If i pass on him i was thinking rice.  Is there any way you guys would go with Rodgers/Andre Johnson wiht the 3rd pick and go outside the box or would you definetly go running back?  Thanks for all the help guys, the site is great!!

Ray Rice is going to have a huge year and in PPR he will be a real beast

Rice could be a beast yes, but MJD has proven year in and year out he’s good for 10+ TD’s and tons of yards…he catches passes as well. Don’t even stress it and take MJD

MJD has gotten like 56 or so TDs in 4 years…I’ll roll with him all day

Draft Jones-Drew. He is your best bet. Don’t sweat the injury rumors at all! The reception numbers will be equal but Jones-Drew will out number Rice in touchdowns!!

Thanks for all the help guys.  What do you guys think about my second and third round choice.  I know it is hard to say but would you go wide receiver then qb….best ones on the board.  Or would you grab another running back?

If the talent’s there I’d go WR in both 2nd and 3rd rounds.  You have your stud RB already, and since it’s PPR you can lock up two great WRs in those rounds and wait for a QB later on. What are the roster spots and how many teams?

12 teams.  We play 1QB, 2WR’s, 2RBS’s, 1TE, Flex of QB, RB, WR, or TE, 1 kicker, 1DEF, one DB and one DL.  6 Bench spots

Yea unless everyone else goes wide receiver crazy before your 2nd pick you should have a shot at landing two out of a crop of miles austin, brandon marshall, desean jackson, greg jennings…which for a ppr league would be great. Make sure to lock up two WRs early, you’ll be able to get a solid RB2 and QB after

100% agree with my Bruno Boys counterparts. As much of a mancrush as I have on Rice, go MJD with your third pick because of his TD totals. Then the two wide outs, another RB and then a QB.

I’ll will say this every year no matter if the top quarterback is Aaron Rodgers, Steve Young, or freakin’ Tim Tebow: NEVER DRAFT A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND. Ever.

Ever.

Lane I agree with you for the most part, but I will ask you this question. What about if you’re in a non-PPR league that gives 6pts for QB touchdowns, you have the 10th pick in the draft, and Aaron Rodgers is sitting right there? Nine times out of ten I would take Rodgers in that situation rather than go with a suspect RB like Rashard Mendenhall.

I understand the temptation there, but I’m of the mindset that I can always get a great QB later in drafts, and that isn’t nearly as clear cut as it is with running backs. The 2009 passing leader (Matt Schaub) is going in the third! Mike Martz’s QB (Jay Cutler) is going in the fifth, and if he can get Jon Kitna to throw for 4,000 yards (twice actually) then Cutler can. Kolb is there in the 7th, Flacco as well. Even Eli threw for 4,000 yards! Heck you could even wait REALLY long, take Chad Henne (who I love btw) and back him up with Big Ben.

There’s so many options that I’d rather take a chance on an undisputed lead back poised for 300+ touches in Mendenhall then splurge early on a consistently deep position, even in the most QB-friendly scoring systems.

I guess it just really depends on who you like. I can guarantee you that in a league like that, Rodgers is going to outscore Mendy this season, so why not take Rodgers then get someone like Beanie Wells (who I really like) in the 3rd or even see who drops to you in the second. Again, I think it just comes down to preference, but you’re not going to kill yourself with either pick.

Oh I guarantee he does, but when 11 out of the top 20 players at the end of 2009 (according to yahoo ranks in an only 4 points per passing TD league) are QBs, it means you can find a few guys that will put up very good numbers and still get a top RB.

But yea I have to admit a good piece of this is personal preference. I’m one of those dinosaurs that always builds his team around a strong running back core. I get really uncomfortable when I don’t have a stud back.

Note to self for the Bruno Boys Staff league that will draft sometime next week… Don’t give away all of your secrets noobs!  Kidding aside, a great debate going on here and it really shows drafting to some degree comes down to preference. I will fill you guys in on my strategy after the draft!

Your draft strategy should evolve as your draft progress…I can’t wait for the staff draft!
