Pac-Man talk and signing Matt Jones on the same day? Cinci is the land of second chances

I was thinking the exact same thing. It amazes me that the Bengals ownership continues to target guys with a sketchy track record. There has to be at least a dozen players on that roster that have been in trouble with the law at some point. The Matt Jones signing interests me because he showed some flashes in 2008 in Jacksonville and has the ability to make an impact if he can stay healthy (and out of jail).

I wonder what fellow staff member Cory Steger has to say about this…after all he bleeds Bengal Orange and Black.

Good Stuff JBDSM.  Being a Steelers fan you must love it when the Bengals offer contracts to all these jailbirds. Just another reason to make fun of a franchise that has failed to win a Super Bowl during their 41 seasons.

Lol. As if I need extra reasons to pick on the Bengals (and the Ravens, too). But like Cavigs said, they just keep coming.I also know that it didn’t stop them from beating us twice this year. I don’t see that happening again anytime soon, though.

I think the Bengals deserve everything they get. I love Marvin as the coach but the decisions that come down from above him, most notably from owner/president/GM Mike Brown, are questionable at best. Seriously, who thinks signing Matt Jones is a good idea?

They probably got Matt Jones on the cheap. This guy is on a second chance and has to prove himself and he did perform pretty well in 2008.
Why not. Now go get T.O. and the Bengals will have a pretty entertaining team

The Bengals weren’t the only team interested in Matt Jones…Tennessee also offered him a one-year contract however Jones felt he’d have a better opportunity with the Bengals than the Titans given the stability of their current receivers (Britt, Gage, and Washington). The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Jones’ contract is worth $700,000…slightly above the league minimum of $630,000. In addition to the rumors about Pacman Jones and T.O., there is a lot of talk that the Bengals are also interested in Donte Stallworth. It would seem that Laveranues Coles’ days are numbered in Cincinnati.

my problem isn’t that they were able to get Matt Jones on the cheap, it’s that, aside from his problems with coke, he always seemed like he was a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. I’m just not sure how well he fits in as a second or third receiver with the Bengals.

Allie, as for Laveranues, I hope you’re right. Dude was a major disappointment last season and clearly is not the same receiver he once was.

BBFG… I agree with you about Laveranues Coles’ days being numbered with the Bengals. The Bengals signed him to a four-year, $28 million deal in 2009 and he returned the favor with just 43 receptions for 514 yards and five touchdowns. Plus he had 11 games this season in which he recorded three receptions or less. That’s not getting the job done for a guy who was given $7 million dollars to play football.  Even if the Matt Jones signing isn’t ideal, or the best for publicity, it makes sense. For almost 10 times less the cost, Jones should be able to match the production of Coles.

Talking football in February is a great thing!

Cory… I addressed my take on the Matt Jones signing in response to BBFG but to reiterate I can see the Bengals reasoning behind it. Coles looked slow and over the hill in 2009, and a $700,000 investment for a player that had 65 receptions, and 761 yards just two years ago is worth the risk. I know he has a history of not thinking with his head, and snorting the white stuff, but Jones is an athletic physical wide receiver who just learned how to play the position five years ago. The risk of this signing is low in my opinion… if he tanks they dump him, if he produces and gives Carson Palmer another option they look like geniuses. Regardless of the outcome, Jones will start the season with minimal fantasy value and until he proves his worth he will likely stay on waivers.

Finally, I think Marvin Lewis is a great coach and did an excellent job with mediocre talent in 2009. There offense wasn’t impressive and there defense played well, but wasn’t exactly full of stars.  I agree with you about Mike Brown and his skills as a decision maker. I kind of like to place him in a category of guys who make their decisions by “flipping a coin.”

Just a quick update because I saw Donte’ Stallworth’s name being mentioned as a possibility in Cincinnati….

The Baltimore Ravens just minutes ago announced the signing of Donte’ Stallworth. The deal is reportedly worth $900,000 with incentives that could put him over $1 million on the year. With Derrick Mason once again contemplating retirement and Mark Clayton and Kelley Washington being marginal at best I can see why they signed Stallworth; however, I think this guy has always been on of the most over-rated wide outs in the NFL. He has the speed to stretch the field but his suspect hands and average route running doesn’t cut it for me. What good is it when you are fast but can’t separate yourself from a defender?

In my opinion, Stallworth will once again disappoint in 2010. Joe Flacco has a big arm, so a few big plays are likely, but that’s about it for the wide out who is joining his fifth NFL team in eight seasons.
