Maybe it´s too early. But as fan after watching the rest of the leauges performance against what improvements I´ve seen with the texans..I really feel they are now a probable for the playoffs. I will separate my reasons into two catagories..division rivals and team performance. Lets start with division rivals. 1 the Colts. Quite simply it looks as if the Texans cheif rival is out of the picture. There is just not enough of a team there to compete. 2. I will lump the rest of the division together. The Titians, and the Jags..neither team looks to me to be more than a 8 or 9 win capable team this year. When looking at the rest of the Texans schedule. 10 wins is more than concievable, and as many as 12 or 13 quite possible. Play decent, and the Texans could actually make the playoffs by default.
Now lets discuss a bit the performance and improvements on the Texans team as a whole. I will begin with defense as that was a major hole in the team last year. The defensivie secondary was horrible..it is not horrible this year. Perhaps it is not great, but it does not need to be great to make the playoffs, just better and it is. The new new defensive 3-4 while I personally don´t like the 3-4 defense because of the holes it creates for the running game, the running game is not what will stop the Texans from making the playoffs this year. In the pass happy nfl, this will work to thier favor and they may well be able to compete better against pass happy teams. The Texans running game is much improved this year. Though we had an excellent running game last year, this year we really have a 3 headed monster capable of running teams into the ground. That running game is going to be the key to a deeper playoff run. However this is not about a deep playoff run right now..just making the playoffs. Matt Shaubs numbers are going to be down this year. Really..why pass so much when you can run the ball and win. Time of possession is going to be the difference this year. If the Texans can keep time of possession in thier favor by a 60 percent to 40 percent margin..whoaaa..how bout that..and yes it is possible. It is also quite concievable that his decrease in numbers proves to be of benifiet. Run the ball, open the passing and improve pass percentage. hmmm what a thought..It is my opinion that we can compete with both Green Bay and the Pats in this manner by controlling time of possession. Then with the 3-4 defense pressuring the quarterback in passing situations cause some turnovers. It will actually be a team like the Jets with a solid running game that prove to be the biggest problems.. I´m not going to sit here and tell you that the Texans are going to beat up on the Pats this year..or that they are going to rout the Saints. I am going to say they can compete though by shoving the running game down their throats, playing adequate defense and pressuring QBs will get them to the playoffs…and maybe a bit more….

I hate watching games with Chris Collinsworth in the announcer booth, and last night was chock full of reasons for that hatred.

The guy always seems to be hanging on the nuts of the all-stars. On one of the drives, I heard him use Peyton’s name on almost EVERY play. Addai runs for 4 yards for the first down. “Peyton just wanted that first down.” Addai runs for 8 yards after contact. “Peyton made a great adjustment in his play-calling there!” But throwing a ball high on the back shoulder of a receiver with trailing coverage? Nothing mentioned but the receivers earlier mistakes. Even to start the game, they seemed to agree that NYJ had the better team, but Indy “has Peyton.”

I loved watching him get excited about the Vinatieri FG. With A MINUTE REMAINING, they were both acting like the game was over, and that Peyton had carried them to victory once again. Watching that final Jets drive had me standing. (I’d passed out on the couch at half-time, so I felt some energy.) Awesome work.

Congrats on the road victory, New Yorkers!
Maybe Jacksonville can watch those tapes in the off-season and learn something about perseverance.
