Austin Ekeler, RB, Los Angeles Chargers
Melvin Gordon is clearly the Chargers’ lead back, with 24 touches and a team-high nine catches (for 102 yards) in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs. But Ekeler had a nice game too, with a career-high 126 total yards including five catches (on five targets) for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Ekeler had some good moments as a rookie in 2017, averaging 5.5 yards per carry along with 27 receptions and three receiving touchdowns. He’s still basically a high-level handcuff to Gordon, but there’s some standalone value to be had (especially in PPR formats).
If Gordon were to go down, Ekeler would step into a heavy workload in a prolific offense. That makes him a priority add for Gordon owners in deeper leagues, and those that don’t have Gordon but need better running back depth should also have him on the radar.
