WEEK 5 PICK THEM UP:  QB  |  RB  |  WR  |  TE  |  K  |  DEF

The fourth week of NFL games is over and the waiver wire is looking surprisingly dry for the first time this season. Nevertheless, there is still some value out there for those that have the roster space. A majority of the fantasy football waiver wire adds we recommend this week are the same ones we recommended last week, which goes to show just how useful this article can be for getting the jump on potential adds.

Be sure to check out our “Carryovers from Last Week” section because in most cases those guys hold the most value.

Quick Note: Not all players that had strong Week 4 outings are on this list, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have value. If you have any questions about free agents not discussed in this article, head over to the forums and we’ll help you with the answers. If you are wondering who to cut to pick these one of these players up, stay tuned for our Week 5Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Cut List.

QUARTERBACKS—PICK THEM UP

Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers

Alex Smith’s lack of impressive passing numbers so far is almost directly the result of the San Francisco 49ers defense having ridiculous success. They shut down the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and New York Jets to the point that passing wasn’t even necessary. The one game Smith did get to throw was the game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. Unfortunately the Vikings’ tough defense made that outing less than stellar.

The 49ers play the Buffalo Bills in Week 5 which means more success for the defense. The Bills also happen to have a horrendous pass defense. If the Bills can somehow put up some points, Smith will have a field day. The worst case scenario is that Smith has a fairly successful day with fewer than 30 attempts. Either way, you can do worse for a bye week fill-in or a second quarterback in 2QB leagues. Smith is available in 31% of Fleaflicker leagues so grab him if he’s there and you need him.

Consider Adding In: 12-team and 14-team Leagues, particularly two-quarterback leagues or as a bye week fill-in
