Who saw that one coming? Peyton Manning makes a critical mistake and gets intercepted for a pick-six. You can’t put all the blame on Peyton, though. You have to give credit to the other Payton - New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. He made a brilliant call with the onside kick at the start of the second half, and that really turned the tide in the Super Bowl. The Saints won the Super Bowl, thus officially ending the 2009 season. It seems like only yesterday we were making our draft cheat sheets with Matt Forte in the top 3. How times have changed. Before too long it will be time to start making our cheat sheets for the 2010 draft.
New Orleans Saints 31 vs. Indianapolis Colts 17
In this predicted offensive shootout, no one quite expected this final score. The Indianapolis Colts not scoring 20 points was very surprising. Manning threw for over 300 yards with a touchdown, but he had a costly interception that ended up putting an end to his teams chances of taking home the Lombardi Trophy. He couldn’t find Reggie Wayne a whole lot, as Wayne finished with only five catches for 46 yards. Not to mention, the last real play from scrimmage was a dropped pass in the endzone by Wayne. Dallas Clark had seven catches for 86 yards to lead the team. Clark should be very high on everyone’s tight end big board next year. Joseph Addai had a solid showing against a not-so-great New Orleans rush defense. He totaled 77 yards with a score. It should be interesting to see how this backfield shapes up next season with Donald Brown. While Drew Brees didn’t throw for as many yards as Manning, throwing for 288 yards, he found the endzone twice and had no interceptions. The Super Bowl MVP connected with Pierre Thomas and Jeremy Shockey for the two scores. Thomas only had 30 yards rushing, but he also had 55 receiving yards. He should remain the every-down running back in the high powered Saints offense next season. Reggie Bush was once again quiet today. He’s a huge boom or bust player, and should probably be avoided in fantasy football drafts next season, unless you’re in a big league. Marques Colston led the Saints in receiving yards with 83, but also had some key drops. Colston was great during the regular season, but wasn’t so stellar in the postseason. Brees ended up going to Devery Henderson quite a bit in the playoffs.
