Missed one of the preseason games this past week? Don’t worry about it. Instead take a look at our Preseason Week 2 Game-By-Game Recap in which we breakdown some of the best and worst performances in the NFL. Also, use this article to get a gauge on how some of the position battles are shaping up around the league.
Buffalo Bills 34 vs. Indianapolis Colts 24
* With all the preseason playing time belonging to him at the moment, C.J. Spiller rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries, including a 31-yard touchdown.
* Trent Edwards hit Lee Evans on a 70-yard touchdown pass. You can expect Edwards to keep the starting job, at least for Week 1, despite Brian Brohm going 14-for-21 and 125 yards passing. Edwards finished 5-of-8 for 93 yards and the touchdown.
* Peyton Manning led the Colts on two scoring drives in the five series he played. He connected with Jacob Tamme for a score and Joseph Addai rushed for the other TD.
* Donald Brown had four rushes for 23 yards.
* Anthony Gonzalez was the only top Colts’ receiver to make the stat sheet, totaling two catches for eight yards. Manning targeted Gonzalez on another pass that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.
New England Patriots 28 @ Atlanta Falcons 10
* The top story of this game, Wes Welker returned to action and caught two passes for 20 yards.
* Both of New England’s rookie tight ends, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski finished with four catches. Hernandez, who also caught a touchdown, is believed to be the front- runner.
* Matt Ryan went 8-for-13 for 76 yards, driving the Falcons into the Patriots’ territory, but could not get into the end zone.
* Michael Turner tallied two receptions, as the Falcons claim he’ll figure into the passing game more in 2010. He also had eight carries for 32 yards.
* Fred Taylor notched 11 carries for 54 yards and a score, while Laurence Maroney didn’t get a single carry. Sammy Morris also had 50-plus yards rushing with a score.
* Tom Brady went 10-for-12 for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Cincinnati Bengals 22 vs. Philadelphia Eagles 9
* Don’t look now, but Terrell Owens went from not on a team, to looking like Carson Palmer’s go-to receiver. He led the Bengals with three catches for 67 yards, including a 43-yarder.
* Chad Ochocinco had two catches for 29 yards.
* Cedric Benson had 10 rushes for 30 yards. Bernard Scott had two rushes for 13 yards with a goaline touchdown.
* Jermaine Gresham also had three catches for 34 yards. It’s looking like Palmer will be spreading the ball around a lot this season.
* Jeremy Maclin scared fantasy football owners with his injury, but x-rays came back negative.
* DeSean Jackson had four catches for 74 yards, part of Kevin Kolb’s 126 yards passing on the night.
* The Eagles first-team offense has not been able to cash in yet in the preseason. All they have been able to muster thus far are field goals.
Baltimore Ravens 23 @ Washington Redskins 3
* Donovan McNabb struggled against the Ravens’ defense. He threw a bad interception, threw behind his receivers and was constantly hounded by the Baltimore rush. He finished 11-for-26 for 206 yards. He’s still a good quarterback, however his production could vary drastically week to week, at least until he really settles into his new offense.
* Joe Flacco didn’t have a stellar game himself. He totaled 72 yards passing and finished 9-for-16.
* One of Flacco’s passes was a nice 21-yarder to Anquan Boldin.
* Marc Bulger had a much better game than Flacco, throwing for 130 yards and went 13-for-16, but there’s no chance of him causing a quarterback controversy.
* Ray Rice had three carries for 17 yards, but he fumbled twice. One fumble was actually credited to Flacco, and the Ravens recovered both times.
* Larry Johnson had a dreadful night and really ensured Clinton Portis’ top spot on the depth chart. Johnson could be in jeopardy of being cut because he can’t block to save his life.
* Santana Moss had four catches for 79 yards.
Need help with your fantasy football cheat sheets? We’ve got you covered….
Pittsburgh Steelers 24 @ New York Giants 17
* In his preseason debut, Ben Roethlisberger led the Steelers to a field goal. Stash him on your bench, and hope he gets back on track after the suspension. He finished 6-for-8 for 76 yards.
* Byron Leftwich connected with Mike Wallace for a 68-yard touchdown. Wallace is a guy you have to keep on the top of your sleeper list on draft day.
* Dennis Dixon also led Pittsburgh on two scoring drives. Both he and Leftwich have been decent thus far in the preseason, but they’ll be riding the bench once Big Ben is back.
* Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a nine-yard touchdown run, but the question remains of he can handle the load as the feature back.
* Steve Smith hauled in a nice 45-yard catch. Even with the up-and-coming Hakeem Nicks, Smith should have another quality year.
* Last week’s “Flavor of the Week” Victor Cruz came back down to Earth this week and hopefully off the end of your draft cheat sheets if you had him on there.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20 vs. Kansas City Chiefs 15
* Josh Freeman fractured the tip of his thumb and will sit for the rest of the preseason. While Freeman had little fantasy football value, hopefully this doesn’t stifle the sleeper status of Mike Williams.
* Each of the Tampa Bay’s backup quarterbacks threw for a touchdown. It wouldn’t hurt to check who will get the start if Freeman isn’t good to go, however, the Bucs don’t seem too worried about Freeman’s Week 1 status.
* Simply put, Kareem Huggins is in, Derrick Ward is out. Cadillac Williams’ owners should be a little worried, as well. Huggins led the Bucs in rushing, totaling eight carries for 44 yards.
* Mike Williams had three catches for 44 yards and continues to impress.
* Michael Spurlock hauled in a 53-yard touchdown, but Sammie Stroughter still appears to be the favorite to line up opposite of Williams.
* Matt Cassel improved on last week’s performance to throw for 125 yards, going 14-for-19 with a touchdown.
* Once again, Thomas Jones got the start, but Jamaal Charles outplayed him. Don’t shy away from Charles, but be wary of Jones getting decent playing time.
Miami Dolphins 27 @ Jacksonville Jaguars 26
* Chad Henne seems to have the Jaguars’ number. After having a great regular-season game against them in 2009, Henne finished 11-for-14 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in this contest.
* The Jaguars’ first-round draft pick Tyson Alualu, collected a sack with Aaron Kampman. Alualu had been considered overvalued by Jacksonville.
* Anthony Fasano’s 55-yard touchdown was thanks in part to a huge block from Brandon Marshall.
* Marshall had four catches for 65 yards, but he also dropped another pass.
* Ronnie Brown hit pay dirt and appears to be fully recovered.
* David Garrard improved from last week’s showing, totaling 79 yards with a touchdown pass to Mike Thomas. He also hit Mike Sims-Walker for a 35-yard pass and a 22-yard pass.
* Luke McCown put up impressive numbers, but the job still appears to be secure with Garrard.
* Marcedes Lewis, who had two catches for 21 yards, has been praised by his coaches for having a strong camp
St. Louis Rams 19 @ Cleveland Browns 17
* Jake Delhomme once again produced a strong effort, going 12-for-16 for 127 yards and a touchdown pass to Ben Watson.
* Delhomme was effective without arguably the Browns’ best receiver, Mohamed Massaquoi, but nobody is buying the recent trend of Delhomme just yet.
* Seneca Wallace also had some success, finding Josh Cribbs in the end zone for a touchdown.
* Sam Bradford had another unimpressive outing. The Rams will get a great look at him next week because A.J. Feeley got injured in this game, and while he’s expected to play next week, Bradford is slated to start.
* Steven Jackson rushed four times for 20 yards.
* Colt McCoy didn’t complete a pass in his time in the game.
