Missed one of the preseason games this past week? Don’t worry about it. Instead take a look at our Preseason Week 1 Game-By-Game Recap in which we breakdown some of the best and worst performances in the NFL. Also, use this article to get a gauge on how some of the position battles are shaping up around the league.
New England Patriots 27 vs. New Orleans Saints 24
- Drew Brees was 9-for-13 for 55 yards, including a 20-play, 86-yard drive that lasted just over 10 minutes. That drive ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Reggie Bush.
- Tom Brady competed in the Patriots’ first two drives, going 5-for-8 for 67 yards.
- Wes Welker did not play, but is expected to suit up in the season opener. In his absence, Julian Edelman posted six catches for 90 yards. Edelman’s fantasy football value diminishes incredibly when Welker returns.
- Laurence Maroney, who at this time stands atop the Patriots’ running back depth chart, punched in two goaline scores.
- With Lynell Hamilton gone for the season, Pierre Thomas stepped in and rushed eight times for 27 yards and caught four passes for 26 yards.
- Robert Meacham didn’t play in the game, but he recently came off the PUP list.
Baltimore Ravens 17 vs. Carolina Panthers 12
- Joe Flacco was impressive in his preseason debut, leading the Ravens on two scoring drives, one ending in a field goal and the other ending with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Mark Clayton.
- The Panthers’ offense was unable to score a touchdown. Matt Moore finished the game 4-for-7 for 32 yards. Rookie Jimmy Clausen was 8-for-15 for 80 yards with an interception. All signs still point to Moore being the starter, at least for Week 1.
- Ray Rice suited up, but didn’t get any work in.
- Flacco, who finished 8-for-12 for 120 yards with the TD pass, spread the ball around to Clayton and Donte Stallworth, in addition to Anquan Boldin. Clayton led the Ravens in receiving with two catches for 48 yards.
- Perhaps the most significant aspect to take away from this game was after the 2009 Ravens’ offense depended heavily on dump-off passes to Rice, Flacco was able to spread the field more against Carolina with the new wide receiver acquisitions.
Oakland Raiders 17 @ Dallas Cowboys 9
- In his Raider debut, Jason Campbell posted totals of 49 yards while completing seven of his 13 passes.
- Tony Romo was sacked three times, and the Dallas offensive line gave up a total of four sacks in 20 snaps.
- The Dallas offense had trouble in the redzone, failing to find the endzone in four tries, and came away with only field goals in three of them.
- Miles Austin hauled in two passes for 33 yards
- Kyle Boller completed 12 of his 21 throws for 148 yards with a touchdown. There’s no quarterback controversy on this team, though.
- Michael Bennett led Oakland in rushing with 12 attempts for 68 yards. Both Michael Bush and Darren McFadden need to get injured in order for Bennett to make a serious impact.
Washington Redskins 42 vs. Buffalo Bills 17
- Donovan McNabb found the end zone in his first preseason game with the Redskins, completing 5-of-8 passes for 58 yards with the score.
- We’ll all get a good look at C.J. Spiller for the rest of the preseason, as both Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch are nursing injuries that will likely keep them on the sidelines for the remainder of the preseason.
- A possible preview of things to come, McNabb connected with Chris Cooley three times for 33 yards.
- Trent Edwards was good on only half of his passes (6-12) for 58 yards and an interception. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a 5-yard TD to David Nelson.
- Rex Grossman was 11-for-18 for 140 yards and two touchdowns. As long as McNabb is healthy, Grossman will never see the field in the regular season.
- Devin Thomas led the Redskins in receiving with three catches for 64 yards, including a 44-yarder, and a touchdown.

Philadelphia Eagles 28 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars 27
- After Luke McCown’s 244-yard, three-touchdown performance, there are some rumblings about a possible QB controversy in Jacksonville.
- David Garrard only completed five of his 10 passes for 35 yards.
- Maurice Jones-Drew had two rushes for zero yards. No need to worry, though.
- Kevin Kolb was 6-of-11 passing for 95 yards. Michael Vick was 11 of 17 for 119 yards and ran for 50 yards with a touchdown. This is Kolb’s team, but it’s possible Vick could land himself on an NFL team and your fantasy football team in 2011.
- Kolb threw 20-yard passes to DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. He would have had a touchdown pass to Brent Celek, but Celek couldn’t hang on to it.
- Philly failed to score a touchdown in four red zone attempts
- David Akers, one of 2009’s best fantasy kickers, made all five of his field goal attempts
Atlanta Falcons 20 vs. Kansas City Chiefs 10
- Rookie Dexter McCluster showed some impressive moves. He may not be somebody to draft, but he’s definitely somebody to keep an eye on.
- Michael Turner collected 29 yards on four carries.
- The highlight of Matt Ryan’s day was hitting Tony Gonzalez on two third-down pass plays.
- Matt Cassel didn’t have much time to show off any offseason improvements as he was getting sacked and hurried by the Falcons for most of his time in the game.
- Thomas Jones started the game, but Jamaal Charles saw more work. Don’t be fooled by the depth chart saga, the Chiefs know what they have in Charles.
Miami Dolphins 10 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7
- Tampa Bay rookie Mike Williams, snagged a 30-yard pass, and has already earned a starting role.
- Josh Freeman later connected with Sammie Stroughter for their only touchdown.
- Ronnie Brown carried five times for 20 yards, and Ricky Williams ran three times for 10 yards.
- Chad Henne only threw for 19 yards, but playing in the rain and the mud in the first quarter, it was hard for any Dolphin to hang on to the ball, including Brandon Marshall.
- Derrick Ward had 12 carries to Cadillac Williams’ four. Rumor has it Ward is in jeopardy of getting cut from the team.
- Tyler Thigpen threw for 145 yards on 10-for-19 passing, however he is no threat to Henne.
Pittsburgh Steelers 23 vs. Detroit Lions 7
- Dennis Dixon outplayed Byron Leftwich and is pushing himself to be the starter while Ben Roethlisberger waits on the sidelines. Big Ben did not play in this game
- Dixon threw a 68-yard touchdown pass and also added a 51-yard heave. He also rushed for 31 yards.
- Matthew Stafford looked impressive, connecting with Calvin Johnson on a two-yard score, although that score came against Pittsburgh backups.
- Stafford finished 8-for-11 for 61 yards.
- Highly touted rookie Jahvid Best had a 15-yard scamper as part of his six carries for 29 yards. A promising start for Best.
