Jonathan Stewart (Carolina Panthers)
Well when you can’t pass the ball you might as have a good running game, and the Carolina Panthers might just have the best rushing tandem in the league with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Before week six Stewart hadn’t been too involved in the offense for the Panthers but that changed last week in Carolina’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Stewart rushed 17 times for 110 yards and a touchdown in that game. Remember last season when the Panthers figured out they could run the ball with Williams and Stewart they suddenly became pretty good. Expect Stewart to continue to get around 15 touches going forward.
WIDE RECEIVERS — PICK THEM UP
Hakeem Nicks (New York Giants)
And in the case of another receiver stepping for the New York Giants it was rookie Hakeem Nicks that did it last week in the loss to the New Orleans Saints. In that game Nicks caught five passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Nicks, who was a first round pick earlier this year, has great talent and it appears he’s starting to make good on it despite the whole notion that rookie receivers don’t produce. However, given how rookie receivers - even the best of them - tend to be inconsistent and because the Giants have a good pair of receivers in Marion Manningham and Steve Smith, Nicks should only be considered in deeper leagues for now.
Sidney Rice (Minnesota Vikings)
The addition of quarterback Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings has really been a boon to the offense, in particular the receivers. That’s been the case for Sidney Rice, who caught six passes for 176 yards in the Vikings’ win over the Baltimore Ravens last week. Rice is a great talent as he not only has good speed but he’s always got great hands. Bernard Berrian is more of a deep threat for the Vikings so look for Favre to go to Rice more often. He would make for a good pickup in any league.
Mike Thomas (Jacksonville Jaguars)
Mike Sims-Walker has emerged as the go-to guy at receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars but rookie Mike Thomas has also started to step up. Torry Holt had more yards than Thomas in the team’s overtime win over the St. Louis Rams last week but Thomas was targeted more and had more receptions as he caught seven passes for 52 yards. Thomas is a guy the Jaguars like and will try to get more involved in the offense, however he is a rookie and so for now he should only be looked at in deeper leagues.
TIGHT ENDS — PICK THEM UP
Zach Miller (Oakland Raiders)
A lot of things have not gone well for the Raiders this season but they can take some solace in their win over the Eagles last week. And if there’s one pass-catcher on Oakland that’s worth owning in your fantasy league it’s tight end Zach Miller. Miller, who is the most sure-handed receiving threat on the team, caught six passes for 139 yards and a touchdown in the win over Philadelphia. Even though JaMarcus Russell is extremely inconsistent as a quarterback he seems to be able to find Miller often enough to make Miller worth owning. You should consider Miller in standard and deeper leagues.
