WIDE RECEIVERS – SIT ‘EM

Mario Manningham (New York Giants) @ New Orleans

Manningham’s elusiveness and big play ability has allowed him to succeed in New York this season. In what should be the most intriguing game of the week, two unbeatens are going head-to-head. Manningham now has to compete with WR Hakeem Nicks as a downfield threat, and the Saints secondary is no slouch. Coming off a bye, they can expect to be refreshed and ready to go against the Giants. Manningham has averaged 6 points per week in the past 3 games, but we believe he fails to reach that mark in week 6.

Jeremy Maclin (Philadelphia Eagles) @ Oakland

This is one of those things that happens each and every season; a wide receiver (specifically) has a huge game, and their ownership flies up to the point of people believing they are start-able each week. Anybody remember Kevin Curtis in 2007? In week 3, he posted 221 yards and 3 TDs. Owners loved him. 13 weeks following? 3 games over 8 points. Is that the type of consistency you can expect from Maclin? Who knows…but while it’s not a bad idea to stash Maclin away, realize that a big game is possible at any time, but the consistency is surely not.

Santonio Holmes (Pittsburgh Steelers) vs. Cleveland

After week 1, fantasy owners were scrambling to trade for this Super Bowl hero. To say that he’s been average would be an overstatement. He has averaged just under 4 points a game since his week 1 match-up, so he may have lost his must start privileges until he can prove worthy. The Browns have only allowed 209 pass yards per game and 5 TDs in 5 games though, so they are not bad against the pass (it doesn’t hurt that they are awful against the run). Teams that drafted Holmes as their #2 probably don’t have the luxury of sitting him, but if you do, wait til he gets back on track before you start him again.

TIGHT ENDS – SIT ‘EM

Greg Olsen (Chicago Bears) @ Atlanta

Many Olsen owners are struggling to plug him securely into their lineup on a weekly basis because of his flair for inconsistency. Fortunately he has posted back-to-back TD games, but there isn’t much to show that he is a reliable option week in and week out. The Falcons allowed TE Vernon Davis to get 51 receiving yards in week 5, but considering that would best Olsen’s season-high, we can’t exactly say that he can accumulate that much. If you’re waiting for Olsen to break out, you may have to keep waiting.

KICKERS – SIT ‘EM

Ryan Longwell (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Baltimore

It’s become anyone’s guess as to which kickers will do well on a weekly basis. Typically, go for the kickers facing poor defensive teams, and you are in good shape. On the other hand, when a kicker is facing a solid defensive team, such as the Baltimore Ravens, we can’t highly recommend them for the match-up. Even though they each have very good offenses, this game could be low-scoring and not provide ample opportunities for Longwell to use his leg.

DEFENSES – SIT ‘EM

Chicago Bears D/ST @ Atlanta

The Bears have proven to be a mediocre fantasy defense thus far in 2009. Their pass rush has been their one strong point, but the same could have been said for the San Francisco 49ers who recorded zero sacks in week 5 versus the Falcons. The Falcons came out gunning after their bye week, and posted a phenomenal 45 points and really failed to make mistakes. If QB Matt Ryan can play like that in week 6, the Bears could be in for a long day. Sit the Bears with confidence that they can come back against a lesser opponent in Week 8. Yes, Week 8 is two weeks away, but they face the lowly Cleveland Browns. Hold onto them until that match-up if you so choose to.
