13. Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) vs. Chicago
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has played well this season but his performance last week in the blowout win over the San Francisco 49ers as he had 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. In fact Ryan’s only bad performance from a fantasy football perspective came in a loss at New England but Ryan didn’t the turn the ball over in that game he just failed to register a touchdown. That shouldn’t be a problem for him in against the Bears.
Point Projection: 15 points
14. Kyle Orton (Denver Broncos) @ San Diego
The Broncos are undefeated at 5-0 this season and though the defense has been stellar, it’s been the surprisingly good play of quarterback Kyle Orton that has helped lead Denver. Last week in the overtime win over the Patriots Orton threw for 330 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Orton is quickly growing more and more comfortable with the offense and he’s got something he didn’t have in Chicago and that’s confidence.
Point Projection: 14 points
15. Kurt Warner (Arizona Cardinals) @ Seattle
Aside from the first week of the season and last week’s blowout win over the Jaguars, the Seattle defense has been pretty mediocre this season. And furthermore the Seahawks have just two interceptions this season. All signs point to Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner having a huge game against the Seahawks but also consider this game will be in Seattle, one of the tougher places to play in the NFL. In his last two games in Seattle, Warner has thrown four touchdowns but added five interceptions and a lost fumble to go with those scores.
Point Projection: 13 points
16. Carson Palmer (Cincinnati Bengals) vs. Houston
With a 7:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer does not appear to be having a great season but he’s been a large part of the reason the Bengals are 4-1 and currently atop the AFC North standings. The good thing about Palmer is you pretty much know what to expect if you decided to start him. He’s going to throw for around 200 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Expect just a little more than that this week against the Texans.
Point Projection: 13 points
17. David Garrard (Jacksonville Jaguars) vs. St. Louis
Following three straight weeks of good performances Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard laid an egg last week in the loss to the Seahawks, who aren’t exactly known for their defense. This week Garrard gets to play at home against the hapless Rams, who are 24th in passing yards allowed and 31st in points allowed. Still, as bad as the Rams defense is, given how spotty Garrard has been it’s tough to recommend him for a big game this week.
Point Projection: 12 points
18. Kerry Collins (Tennessee Titans) @ New England
Having been a playoff team last year then starting 0-5 this year, not a lot has gone right for the Titans. The calls for Vince Young to replace Kerry Collins at quarterback are growing louder by the week and Collins hasn’t done much to quiet those voices with two single-digit fantasy football performances in the last three weeks. Collins should do OK this week from a points perspective, but he does not instill much confidence into those considering him for a start.
Point Projection: 12 points
19. Matt Cassel (Kansas City Chiefs) @ Washington
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel has had better and better performances as the season has gone on as evidenced by his 253-yard, two-touchdown game last week in the overtime loss to the Cowboys. Still the Chiefs are struggling to consistently move the ball and the running game is bad. It won’t get any better this week when the Chiefs travel to Washington, a team that’s third in the NFL against the pass and seventh in points allowed.
Point Projection:: 11 points
20. Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) vs. Buffalo
Watching New York quarterback Mark Sanchez play against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football last week, you could see the potential that made him a top draft pick, but you could also see that he is still very raw. He’s still throwing behind his receivers, staring down his primary instead of checking down and avoiding pocket pressure a little too late for comfort. He’s going to be a good one but don’t expect that to happen overnight.
Point Projection: 10 points
21. Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins) vs. Kansas City
Washington quarterback Jason Campbell’s struggles with consistency and turning the ball over do not inspire much confidence in the guy. He’s not played too well at home this season either. The Chiefs are among the last in the league in every major defensive category but we can’t but feel like Campbell will find some way to mess up a good opportunity.
Point Projection: 9 points
22. Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers) @ Tampa Bay
It’s becoming painful to watch Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme play this season. With three touchdowns and eight interceptions in the first four games it does not appear things are getting any better for Delhomme and the Panthers offense. Even though they play against the Buccaneers, who are 30th in points allowed, you still shouldn’t expect much from Delhomme this week.
Point Projection: 9 points
23. Kyle Boller / Marc Bulger (St. Louis Rams) @ Jacksonville **CHECK INJURY STATUS**
We can’t decide which is worse for the Rams: starting Marc Bulger or starting Kyle Boller at quarterback. Both have trouble throwing touchdowns and are prone to turnovers. Regardless if Boller or Bulger starts this week, neither one should be on your fantasy team, let alone in your starting lineup.
Point Projection: 8 points
24. Daunte Culpepper / Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) @ Green Bay **CHECK INJURY STATUS**
Detroit quarterback Daunte Culpepper got the start for the injured Matt Stafford last week and he did OK as he threw for 282 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a close loss to the Steelers. Stafford went through pre-game warmups last week but that was about it so we expect Culpepper to get his second start of the season. And playing at Green Bay won’t be easy, or kind, to Culpepper and the Lions.
Point Projection: 8 points
25. Josh Johnson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. Carolina
In his second start last week Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Johnson flashed some potential in a losing effort to the Eagles where he threw for 240 yards and had two touchdowns and three interceptions. Johnson will face another tough pass defense this week as the Buccaneers play host to the Panthers, who are second in the NFL in passing yards allowed.
Point Projection: 7 points
26. Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills) @ New York Jets
Perhaps no quarterback has gone downhill faster this season than Buffalo’s Trent Edwards. Since throwing four touchdowns and one interception in the first two weeks he’s thrown one touchdown and five interceptions in the last three weeks. Playing at the Jets, who have some of best blitz defenses in the league, won’t alleviate any pressure the Bills have.
Point Projection: 6 points
27. Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns) @ Pittsburgh
Now, there have been a lot of bad performances by quarterbacks this season in the NFL, but perhaps none was worse than what Cleveland’s Derek Anderson did last week. In a win over the Bills, Anderson attempted 17 passes and completed just two of them. That’s right, Anderson was 2-for-17 for 23 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. That’s good for an 11.7 completion percentage. Avoid him at all costs this week against Pittsburgh.
Point Projection:: 6 points
28. JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders) vs. Philadelphia
It won’t be too long until the JaMarcus Russell experiment is over in Oakland, at least it shouldn’t be if the Raiders care about winning games. By throwing for just 100 yards and losing three fumbles Russell actually registered negative fantasy football points last week. Against Philadelphia this week Russell has the potential to actually do worse.
Point Projection: 3 points
WEEK SIX BYE WEEK QUARTERBACKS
Chad Henne (Miami Dolphins) - Don’t be fooled by Henne’s good performance against the Jets last week. The playcalling was expertly designed to take all the pressure off of him and put him in the best possible position to succeed. It won’t always be that way and when it’s not he’ll struggled a lot as a first-year starter.
Shaun Hill (San Francisco 49ers) - Shaun Hill has been adequate at quarterback for the 49ers this season, but he’s been just good enough to help lead San Francisco to a 3-1 record. Can he become a factor in fantasy football? That remains to be seen.
Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts) - Nobody has started the season better than Peyton Manning of the Colts. Having found a new target in rookie Austin Collie, and with Anthony Gonzalez expected to return at some point this season, can Manning actually get better?
Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys) - It appears Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has a new target in wide receiver Miles Austin. Perhaps he’s wishing that had happened sooner.
