26. Percy Harvin (Minnesota Vikings) @ St. Louis
Harvin had his lowest combined rushing and receiving yardage of the season in the Vikings’ win over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. He could have his highest total this week against a poor Rams defense. Harvin is too explosive for anyone on the Rams to stop, so don’t be surprised if he has the best game of his young career.
Point Projection: 9 points
27. Kevin Walter (Houston Texans) @ Arizona
Walter caught just one throw on Sunday, but it did go for 41 yards. The previous week, however, he was close to 100 receiving yards and scored a touchdown on seven catches, so he’s clearly part of the Texans’ plans in the passing game. When defenses concentrate too much on Andre Johnson, Walter is there to hurt them.
Point Projection: 8 points
28. Santana Moss (Washington Redskins) @ Carolina
Two weeks of solid play followed two weeks of wretchedness to make us believe in Moss, to some extent, yet again. His inconsistent play makes it difficult to trust him, but he has caught long touchdown passes in consecutive weeks, and someone outside of Chris Cooley has to catch the ball for the Redskins.
Point Projection: 8 points
29. Antonio Bryant (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @Philadelphia
Bryant caught a touchdown pass last week to go with 44 receiving yards on four catches, and now that his knee is healthier, he should start to produce at a higher level. That could obviously be tough this week against a robust Philadelphia Eagles pass defense, but if any Buccaneers player is going to find the end zone, it seems likely that that player will be Bryant.
Point Projection: 9 points
30. Mike Wallace (Pittsburgh Steelers) @ Detroit
Wallace has become the No. 3 wideout for Pittsburgh, having caught multiple passes in every game so far this season. The team’s match-up with the poor pass defense of the Lions is a reason to really like the rookie from Arizona, who could be the beneficiary if Detroit concentrates too much of their efforts on Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward.
Point Projection: 8 points
31. Lee Evans (Buffalo Bills) vs. Cleveland
We believe in Lee! Alright, so our confidence in him is wavering big-time, but he did have his highest total of receiving yards so far this season when he piled up 60 of them last week. Evans has simply proven to be too good a deep threat and has too much potential to be mired in the funk he is right now. Cleveland, one of the two worst teams in the NFL, will be his tonic.
Point Projection: 8 points
32. Donnie Avery (St. Louis Rams) vs. Minnesota
In his first week of truly being the Rams’ No. 1 receiver – which we all thought he would be in the preseason anyway, until Laurent Robinson took that role from him – Avery caught just three passes for 47 yards. However, with the Rams’ offense so stagnant, they have no choice but to try and push the ball downfield to their fastest player this week, and that should lead to some big plays.
Point Projection: 8 points
33. Nate Washington (Tennessee Titans) vs. Indianapolis
Washington has seemingly become Titans quarterback Kerry Collins’ favorite receiver. After being targeted 12 times last week, Washington has taken over the team lead in that category with 31 targets compared to Justin Gage’s 30. Washington has caught a touchdown in three consecutive games.
Point Projection: 8 points
34. Josh Morgan (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Atlanta
Morgan broke out of his year-long funk against the Rams (who doesn’t?), catching a touchdown pass in the 49ers’ 35-0 rout of their NFC West rivals. It was nice to see the player who so many had touted as a “sleeper” before the season actually awake. Okay, so he had only two catches for 39 yards otherwise, but he dropped what would have been a sure touchdown earlier in the game, meaning Shaun Hill still trusted him enough to look for him in the end zone, which speaks volumes.
Point Projection: 8 points
35. Mark Clayton (Baltimore Ravens) vs. Cincinnati
Clayton’s five catches last week tied a season-high for him, and his 45 yards were the second-highest total he’s had this season. He should surpass both of those marks this week against a Cincinnati Bengals pass defense that is 28th in football, and against whom Clayton butchered for 164 yards and one touchdown in Week 13 of last year. He also scored a rushing touchdown of 42 yards against them in Week 1 of last season.
Point Projection: 8 points
36. Steve Breaston (Arizona Cardinals) vs. Houston
Breaston has played in two of the Cardinals’ games this season after missing Week 1, and in both of those contests he’s had at least 80 receiving yards. He’s as good a number three wideout as there is in football, and there’s no reason not to believe he’ll be up to his usual shenanigans this week.
Point Projection: 8 points
37. Justin Gage (Tennessee Titans) vs. Indianapolis
After a great start, Gage has fallen off, and last week had just one catch for a measly 15 yards, and he wouldn’t have had that if he didn’t make a spectacular one-handed grab. Nonetheless, Kerry Collins continues to look for him, as evidenced by his 30 targets on the year, which is 13th in the AFC.
Point Projection: 7 points
38. Patrick Crayton (Dallas Cowboys) @ Kansas City
If Roy Williams does not play, move Crayton up a number of spots here. The Chiefs, who are 29th in pass defense, have allowed at least 75 yards to a receiver in each game this season save the one they played against the JaMarcus Russell-led Raiders. In fact, in each of their past two games, the Chiefs have allowed an opposing receiver to gain at least 130 yards and a score.
Point Projection: 7 points
39. Kelley Washington (Baltimore Ravens) vs. Cincinnati
Washington is clearly a solid part of Baltimore’s passing attack, though last week he had just 31 receiving yards, but in fairness he was nursing a groin injury. This week you have to like him to do some damage against his old team, the Bengals, where he never could realize his potential.
Point Projection: 7 points
40. Muhsin Muhammad (Carolina Panthers) vs. Washington
Muhammad has been solid this season, with at least four receptions in each of his team’s first three games before the bye last week. The Washington Redskins have only faced one team that is higher than 15th in the NFL in passing yards, and that was the Giants, and they gave up nearly 250 that game, so their pass defense, while ranked fifth in the league, has not really been tested.
Point Projection: 7 points
41. Braylon Edwards (New York Jets) @ Miami
We have already talked about Edwards being traded to the Jets so we won’t go down that route again. In Week 4, Edwards followed up his zero-catch, zero-yard performance on Sunday by going to a nightclub that night and – allegedly – slugging an individual named Edward Givens, who happens to be a friend of LeBron James. The King took none too kindly to this, saying, “It seems like there’s a little jealousy going on with Braylon and me and my friends.” So on top of just plain stinking, Edwards might also come under disciplinary action this week.
Point Projection: 6 points
42. Mohammed Massaquoi (Cleveland Browns) @ Buffalo
The rookie out of Georgia was targeted 13 times by Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, which could be a harbinger of things to come. Still, Massaquoi was seen as raw coming out of the draft, so the inconsistencies that usually plague rookies are guaranteed to be there with Massaquoi, making it difficult to trust him. Though he did get a boost moving forward as the Browns dealt Braylon Edwards for Chansi Stuckey which should lead to more opportunity for Massaquoi moving forward
Point Projection: 6 points
43. Chansi Stuckey (Cleveland Browns) @ Buffalo
Stuckey was part of the deal that sent disgruntled wide receiver Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets. In return, the Browns received Stuckey and two draft picks. Stuckey was playing a secondary role to Jerricho Cotchery in New York but should immediately see an increase in production with the Browns. Expect him to compete with Mohammed Massaquoi for WR1 targets in the Cleveland offense.
Point Projection: 6 points
44. Isaac Bruce (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Atlanta
The steady veteran wasn’t so steady last week, with only three catches for 20 yards to his name. Still, he’s the proverbial wily veteran who continues to get open by running great routes week after week. The Atlanta Falcons are seventh in the league in pass defense, but they had a bye week, skewing their numbers somewhat.
Point Projection: 6 points
45. Torry Holt (Jacksonville Jaguars) @ Seattle
Holt clearly plays second fiddle to the far more explosive Mike Sims-Walker in Jacksonville, but he still has his uses. Those are mainly on shorter passes, and it’s unlikely Holt will be someone you can ever again count on for 75 yards or so, but he has shown a penchant for finding the end zone throughout his career, and he’s been shut out in that category this season, meaning he’s due.
Point Projection: 6 points
46. Sidney Rice (Minnesota Vikings) @ St. Louis
Rice was on the receiving end of one of Brett Favre’s touchdown throws on Monday night. The end zone seems to be a place Rice is awfully comfortable in. Rice has caught touchdowns in each of his last two games, and since the start of the 2008 season, he has six touchdowns in 14 regular-season games.
Point Projection: 6 points
47. Hakeem Nicks (New York Giants) vs. Oakland
Nicks caught just one pass on Sunday – Steve Smith was pretty much busy catching everything else – but the rookie first-round pick from North Carolina happened to take it 54 yards to the house. After coming back from injury, there’s no doubt the Giants will look to get Nicks more involved in their offense.
Point Projection: 6 points
48. Miles Austin (Dallas Cowboys) @ Kansas City
Austin was targeted eight times on Sunday by quarterback Tony Romo, and though he caught just three passes for 19 yards, the targets loom as a precursor of things to possibly come. This is especially true this week, what with the Cowboys facing a weak Kansas City pass defense and Roy Williams questionable to play.
Point Projection: 6 points
49. Michael Jenkins (Atlanta Falcons) @ San Francisco
Despite the fact that Jenkins is the possession receiver to Roddy White’s deep threat, Jenkins is the one averaging more yards-per-catch than White. That’s nice, but it won’t last much longer. Jenkins is third in the line of Atlanta pass-catchers, behind White and Tony Gonzalez, so expect a solid game with decent yardage, as usual, but nothing more.
Point Projection: 6 points
50. Pierre Garcon (Indianapolis Colts) @ Tennessee
Garcon has seen his receiving yards rise in each game he’s played this season, though he’s never caught more than three passes in any one contest. He has a great match-up this week against the Titans, but the concern over how consistent he can be with so few catches puts him in the middle of the pack.
Point Projection: 5 points
51. Deion Branch (Seattle Seahawks) vs. Jacksonville
The constantly injured Branch seems to be healthy now, and he contributed to the Seattle passing game with six catches, albeit for only 49 yards. Yet you have to like the match-up for he and the rest of the Seahawks’ receiving corps, as the Jaguars are tied with the Tennessee Titans for the worst pass defense in the league.
Point Projection: 5 points
