13. David Garrard (Jacksonville Jaguars) @ Seattle
As noted in our weekly waiver wire article, it appears the David Garrard of old may be returning after an absence during the 2008 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback has thrown five touchdowns with just one interception on the season as has found a favorite target at wide receiver in the emerging Mike Sims-Walker. However, Seattle has only allowed just five passing touchdowns all season and the game is a road game for the Jaguars so temper your expectations for Garrard in this one.
Point Projection: 13 points
14. Seneca Wallace (Seattle Seahawks) vs. Jacksonville
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck did not practice at all the week leading up the game with the Colts last week. In his place Seneca Wallace looked decent as he threw for 257 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, however he did fumble twice. Wallace should have another solid game as the Jacksonville Jaguars have given up seven passing touchdowns and only have four interceptions on the season.
Point Projection: 12 points
15. Kyle Orton (Denver Broncos) vs. New England
As odd as it sounds, Denver quarterback Kyle Orton just keeps getting the job done and registering solid fantasy football performances in the process. However, three of those good performances came against the Browns, Bengals and Raiders. This week Orton faces a much stiffer challenge as the New England Patriots come to town. New England has only given up five passing touchdowns this season, and four of those came against the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills.
Point Projection: 12 points
16. Kerry Collins (Tennessee Titans) vs. Indianapolis
Though Tennessee quarterback Kerry Collins has done well this season from a fantasy football perspective, he is still not a guy you want to rely on for you team. That is especially true this week as Collins faces an Indianapolis Colts defense that is ninth in the league in passing yards allowed and fourth in the NFL in points allowed. Also consider the Colts have allowed just two passing touchdown in four games this season.
Point Projection: 10 points
17. Matt Cassel (Kansas City Chiefs) vs. Dallas
It has been a bit of a struggle for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel this season. He has struggled to consistently find his receivers, which is one reason why he has started to target tight end Sean Ryan. However the emergence of Ryan alone is not enough to inspire a whole lot of confidence in Cassel. Before he can be considered a consistent fantasy football option he’ll need to demonstrate better play. Don’t expect it to start this week against the Cowboys.
Point Projection: 10 points
18. Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills) vs. Cleveland
The first two weeks of the season it appeared Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards was finally developing into a solid starting quarterback as he 442 yards, four touchdowns and just one interception in those games. In two games since then Edwards has thrown for 348 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. Even though he’s going against a Cleveland Browns defense that just isn’t too good and has recorded just one interception this season, you still should not expect much from a struggling Edwards in this game.
Point Projection: 10 points
19. Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins) vs. Carolina
Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell just can’t seem to stop turning the ball over this season, which is uncharacteristic for him. In the last two weeks Campbell has thrown four interceptions and fumbled four times. That does not inspire a lot of confidence to start him, even in the deepest of leagues and against a Carolina Panthers defense that is allowing 15 points per game to the quarterback position.
Point Projection: 9 points
20. Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) @ Miami
Welcome to the NFL, Mark Sanchez. The surprisingly tough New Orleans Saints defense humbled the New York Jets rookie as he threw for 138 yards with no touchdowns, three interceptions and had a fumble. The Miami Dolphins defense won’t be as strong as the Saints were but this is another tough road game for Sanchez, so while he won’t have negative points like he did last week, you should still avoid starting him.
Point Projection: 9 points
21. Daunte Culpepper (Detroit Lions) vs. Pittsburgh
In Detroit’s loss last week to the Chicago Bears starting quarterback Matt Stafford injured his knee and at first it looked to be a pretty serious injury. The early reports are that it’s a dislocated knee cap though the Lions are being mum on the issue and head coach Jim Schwartz said Stafford is day-to-day. For now Daunte Culpepper will get the start at quarterback and he’ll get to face the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are not exactly an easy task with or without Troy Polamalu.
Point Projection: 8 points
22. Shaun Hill (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Atlanta
The last two weeks San Francisco quarterback Shaun Hill has thrown four touchdowns with just one interception. However, he meet one of the tougher passing defenses in the NFC this week in the Falcons, who have allowed just three passing touchdowns on the season. Atlanta tends to give up a lot of yards but the Falcons rank eight in the league in points allowed and should keep HIll in check throughout the afternoon.
Point Projection: 8 points
23. Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns) @ Buffalo
The Browns decided to make the switch from Brady Quinn to Derek Anderson at quarterback and the move infused a bit of life into the offense. Anderson led the Browns on a few scoring drives and had the team in position to win until Palmer drove the Bengals down for a game-winning field goal at the end of overtime. Still it’s hard to have confidence in a guy like Anderson who is interception prone and completes a low number of his passes.
Point Projection: 8 points
24. Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers) vs. Washington
With two touchdowns and seven interceptions it has been an atrocious start to the season for Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme. The Panthers had a bye last week and hopefully they spent that time tinkering with the offense. Unfortunatley for Delhomme, who’s best days are behind him, it won’t matter as the Washington Redskins defense allows just 11 fantasy points per game to the quarterback position.
Point Projection: 7 points
25. Chad Henne (Miami Dolphins) vs. New York Jets
With the injury to starter Chad Pennington, who is out for the season with a shoulder injury, the Dolphins have turned to second-year player Chad Henne at quarterback. Henne did decent in his first start last week as he was 14-for-22 for 135 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. However this week Henne will face one of league’s better defenses, and one that is especially good at shutting down quarterbacks. Just ask Matt Schaub, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
Point Projection: 7 points
26. Kyle Boller (St. Louis Rams) vs. Minnesota
St. Louis starting quarterback Marc Bulger, who has a shoulder injury, was unable to throw at all in the week leading up to the team’s loss to the 49ers. Kyle Boller got the start in his place and went 13-for-24 for 108 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. That should tell you just about all you need to know about Boller.
Point Projection: 6 points
27. Josh Johnson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @ Philadelphia
The Buccaneers decided to ditch Byron Leftwich in favor of Josh Johnson, a fifth-round pick in 2008 who made his first start last week in a loss to the Washington Redskins. For his second start Johnson will play at Philadelphia, a team that has caused more interceptions (6) than allowed touchdown passes (5) and one that is extremely good at blitzing. In his debut Johnson had 10 fantasy points but we’d be surprised if he gets half that in Week 5.
Point Projection: 5 points
28. JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders) @ New York Giants
There’s no way around it: Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell may be the worst starting quarterback in the NFL. Russell is completing 39.8 percent of his passes, has a quarterback rating of 42.4 and has thrown one touchdown with four interceptions. The Giants secondary will eat him apart this week.
Point Projection: 3 points
WEEK FIVE BYE WEEK QUARTERBACKS
Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints) - The Saints may not just be the best team in the NFC but could very well be the best team in the entire league, and a big reason for that has been the superb play of quarterback Drew Brees. With the way they’re playing it’s unfortunate they have a bye this week.
Jay Cutler (Chicago Bears) - After a horrible performance in week one Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has rebounded well with seven touchdown passes and one interception in the last three games.
Philip Rivers (San Diego Chargers) - San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers has played extremely well this season, picking up right where he left off from last season. Now if only his defense could show up, the Chargers would probably be one of the NFL’s best teams.
Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers) - Statistically Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers had a good performance last week but for those that saw the game they saw a different story. Rodgers was sacked seven times and the Packers are growing increasingly thin on the offensive line. That’s something owners of Rodgers need to keep their eyes on.
