17. Rob Bironas (Tennessee Titans) vs. Indianapolis
Through four games Bironas has just 21 fantasy points which ranks as the 24th best kicker. This is not what his owners’ expected out of him when they snagged him as a top-5 kicker in August but you can blame the Titans defense for this one. With Tennessee allowing 27 points per game on defense it has forced the offense to play catch up and limited the kicking chances of Bironas (6 FG attempts in four game). Until the Titans can stop allowing opposing teams to score at will you can’t expect the veteran kicker to be a reliable option.
Point Projection: 5 points
18. Olindo Mare (Seattle Seahawks) vs. Jacksonville
Mare is one of the many kickers that seem to be on hot water but he bought himself an extra week after converting on his lone field goal attempt and knocking in both extra points last week. Outside of a 15 fantasy point performance in Week 3 Mare hasn’t scored more than five points in any games this year and don’t count on him bucking that trend against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week.
Point Projection: 5 points
19. Ryan Succop (Kansas City Chiefs) vs. Dallas
It’s kind of tough to be fantasy relevant when your offense is never in field goal range and that seems to be the case for Succop this year. He has just 3 FG chances in four games to go along with 7 extra points and with the Chiefs likely play catch-up once again you can’t expect Succop to turn it on this week, accurate or not.
Point Projection: 5 points
20. Dan Carpenter (Miami Dolphins) vs. New York Jets
After scoring a lone point in Week 1 Carpenter has 29 fantasy points over the last three weeks and has been one of the hottest kicking options. Many think Carpenter should see plenty of field goal chances this week but if you look deeper into the New York Jets stats you will notice opponents have only attempted 5 field goals in four games. Despite the surge in fantasy production we suggest you start Carpenter with caution.
Point Projection: 5 points
21. Sebastian Janikowski (Oakland Raiders) @ New York Giants
It’s sad when the best player on your team is your kicker but that can be said about Janikowski. He is a perfect 7 for 7 on field goal attempts this year and his 29 fantasy points is tied for 15th at the kicker position. The bad news is that Jankikowski has just three extra points thus far and takes on the top rated New York Giants defense. Despite him showing great accuracy you should only use Janikowski if you are in a Week 5 pinch.
Point Projection: 5 points
22. Jason Hanson (Detroit Lions) vs. Pittsburgh
Hanson has been a solid fantasy option this year having averaged 7.8 points per game through the Lions first four contests. However, a tough match-up against a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that has allowed opponents to convert on just 3 FGs this year is not one you want to rely on come game-day.
Point Projection: 5 points
23. John Kasay (Carolina Panthers) vs. Washington
The southpaw with the big leg has been limited due to the Panthers’ struggles on offense and you can expect that to continue in Week 5 against a Redskins defense that allows just 6.3 points per game to the kicker position. Even if he breaks out in a big way you are better suited keeping Kasay reserved as the Panthers look a step or two behind on offense.
Point Projection: 4 points
24. Shayne Graham (Cincinnati Bengals) @ Baltimore
You’d think that with the improvement on offense in Cincinnati that Graham’s fantasy status would skyrocket but that hasn’t been the case. The veteran kicker ranks 27th at the position with 17 fantasy points and his 4.3 point per game average is just 29th best at the position. This isn’t what we expected from Graham but the Bengals have had trouble on special teams this year and this has led to Graham being less than desirable to date.
Point Projection: 4 points
25. Shaun Suisham (Washington Redskins) @ Carolina
Suisham seems to have his accuracy problems under wraps as he is a perfect 5 for 5 on field goal chances through four weeks but he hasn’t seen the field enough to warrant fantasy football value. Until the Redskins start moving the football down the field you can expect Suisham to hover around 3-6 fantasy points on a weekly basis.
Point Projection: 4 points
26. Billy Cundiff (Cleveland Browns) @ Buffalo
Unless you are a Browns fan there is no reason you should be a Cundiff owner. Even against a Bills defense that is fresh off allowing 38 points to the Miami Dolphins we don’t recommend you invest a starting roster spot on Cundiff. It’s not that he’s been bad it;s that the Browns offense has scored just 49 points in four games.
Point Projection: 4 points
27. Shane Andrus (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @ Philadelphia
After Mike Nugent missed two field goals in a three point loss last week the Buccaneers decided to part ways with Nugent and bring in little known Andrus. In the preseason, the Murray State kicker showed good accuracy having converted on five field goal chances but he will be making his NFL debut in Week 5. Facing a tough Eagles defense don’t expect Tampa Bay to move the football enough to give Andrus a serious shot of putting up quality fantasy points.
Point Projection: 3 point
28. Josh Brown (St. Louis Rams) vs. Minnesota
Brown has gone two games this season without recording a fantasy football point and he had just a lone extra point in another game. The Rams offense is the worst in football and Brown has struggled from accuracy problems this year, having missed 3 of his 4 FG attempts. Avoid at all costs, in fact if you get minus points for kickers missing FGs you might be better off not starting a kicker over using Brown.
Point Projection: 1 point
WEEK 5 BYE WEEK KICKERS
Robbie Gould (Chicago Bears) - Despite only attempting 7 field goals in four games Gould has nailed 3 FGs from 40+ yards and his 33 fantasy points rank tied for 9th at the position. With the Chicago offense being much improved in comparison to years past Gould might attempt as many FGs but he should see an increase in his extra point totals.
Mason Crosby (Green Bay Packers) - Crosby has made 7 of 9 field goal chances and 9 extra points through four games for the 2-2 Packers. His 34 fantasy football points is good for 8th in points at the kicking position and Crosby is a safe play on a weekly basis.
John Carney / Garrett Hartley (New Orleans Saints) - It’ll be interesting to see what the Saints do with Hartley coming back from suspension, and quite honestly, all fantasy owners should be paying close attention because as we all know the Saints are a high-scoring team, leading to solid fantasy outings for their kicker.
Nate Kaeding (San Diego Chargers) - So far this season, Kaeding has benefited greatly from the Chargers’ inability to punch the ball into the end zone once in the red zone. No doubt the Chargers will be working on that issue during the bye, which could lead to a drop in points for Kaeding moving forward.
