WIDE RECEIVERS - PICK THEM UP

Davone Bess (Miami Dolphins)

For a second-year quarterback, Chad Henne of the Miami Dolphins, certainly appears to have a decent hold of the offense, and that’s been good news for his receivers. The Dolphins have a lot of good, young receivers, but Davone Bess looks like the one that’s stepping up now. In a win over the New England Patriots, Bess caught 10 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. That doesn’t mean you should expect his Andre Johnson-like numbers to continue. The Dolphins rely on their running game, and as Henne goes through his growing pains, there will be some ups and downs for Bess. Still, he’s a guy who’s going to have some huge games in the future. As such, he’s worth a look in deeper leagues for now.

Robert Meachem (New Orleans Saints)

New Orleans Saints’ receiver Robert Meachem is on this list because he’s a young receiver in a great offense who’s starting to make good on his talent. On Sunday in the win over the Washington Redskins, Meachem caught eight passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. Given that Drew Brees is the guy throwing passes in New Orleans, that means good things for Meachem. Of course, for those that saw the Saints game against the Redskins you, also, know that Meachem added another touchdown after Brees threw an interception, in which during the return, Meachem stripped the ball, gained possession and ran in for a touchdown. An incredible play for sure!

Louis Murphy (Oakland Raiders)

The addition of Gradkowski to the Oakland offense has meant a boost in the value of the Raiders’ receivers. Oakland does have some good young talent at the receiver position, but it’s not with the rookie they spent a first-round draft pick on, Darrius Heyward-Bey. Instead it’s a guy they took in the fourth round, Louis Murphy. This past weekend in the team’s win over Pittsburgh, Murphy caught four passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. What makes him good is that he’s a deep threat who can actually catch the ball - something the Raiders have been lacking for a while.

Devin Thomas (Washington Redskins)

It took a while, but the Redskins are starting to get their high draft picks from last year at the receiver and tight end position involved in their offensive game plan. One player that’s been a direct beneficiary of this is Devin Thomas. In a loss to the Saints, Thomas set career-highs with seven catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns. He’s the big, physical receiver the Redskins have been lacking for a while. As teams focus on Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle-El, Thomas will find himself in some favorable match-ups. The touchdowns won’t come as often as they did last week, but for now, he’s at least a decent option in deeper PPR leagues.
