WIDE RECEIVERS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Mohamed Massaquoi (Cleveland Browns)

We warned you last week not to put too much stock in the numbers posted during the Cleveland Browns - Detroit Lions’ game, as the stats were more a result of pitiful defensive play than strong offensive performances. Even with Massaquoi amassing 115 yards and a TD and going up against a Bengals’ team in week 12 that he burnt for 148 yards back in week 4, we recommended picking him up only in deep leagues and dire situations. After Sunday’s showing against the Bengals, in which Massaquoi had just one catch for 12 yards. It looks like we were right to temper our expectations. Playing for the Browns just does not provide one with the opportunity for fantasy success as the team is averaging just 11.1 points per game.

Lee Evans (Buffalo Bills)

Since hitting the double digit plateau in three of four games during weeks 6 to 10 (week 9 was the Bills’ bye), Evans’ has recorded just five points combined over the last two weeks, and it’s not like the Bills’ were going against top notch pass defenses in those games as they took on the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins, both of whom rank in the bottom half of the league against the pass. Evans’ struggles have corresponded directly with the firing of head coach Dick Jauron and the installment of Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team’s starting quarterback. It appears both new head coach, Perry Fewell, and Fitzpatrick are operating with the mindset of getting T.O. the ball, a philosophy that has led to just 3 catches for Evans in the last two weeks.

Chad Ochocinco (Cincinnati Bengals)

With the new life he showed earlier this season, Ochocinco quickly returned to fantasy owners’ favor (even causing Bruno Boys Cavigs to retract his nickname [“Ochostinko”] for the Bengals’ receiver), but the wide out is back in the dog house. Granted, dropping Ochocinco may be a bit extreme, but benching him doesn’t seem like a bad idea at the moment. With opposing secondaries focusing their attention his way, daring the Bengals’ to beat them using Andre Caldwell and Laveranues Coles, Ochocinco has averaged just 3.75 fantasy points per game over his last four games. During that span, Ochocinco has not found pay dirt and has just 14 catches for 200 yards. Has “Ochostinko” returned?

Keep Them Cut - Austin Collie (Indianapolis Colts), Torry Holt (Jacksonville Jaguars), Johnny Knox (Chicago Bears), Isaac Bruce (San Francisco 49ers), Laveranues Coles (Cincinnati Bengals) Domenik Hixon (New York Giants), James Jones (Green Bay Packers), Bernard Berrian (Minnesota Vikings), Malcom Floyd (San Diego Chargers)

TIGHT ENDS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit Lions)

What a difference a week makes! Coming out of week 11’s action, a week that saw the Detroit Lions’ rookie tight end haul in a game-winning TD against the Cleveland Browns, Pettigrew was a hot waiver wire pick up. This week, though, he finds himself on the “Cut Them Loose” list.  The Lions had been working the rookie tight end into their game plan a bit more of late, as Pettigrew hauled in 15 passes for 165 yards and 2 TDs during weeks 9 to 11. As such, it appeared he was finally ready to live up to the preseason hype. Unfortunately, Pettigrew’s rookie season came to an abrupt end. The tight end suffered a knee injury in the Lions’ week 12 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving day, which will have him sidelined for the rest of the season. Unless you’re holding onto him in a keeper league, let Pettigrew recover while on your league’s waiver wire.
