WIDE RECEIVERS - PICK THEM UP

Chris Chambers (Kansas City Chiefs)

The Chiefs made a good decision to pick up wide receiver Chris Chambers after the Chargers released him earlier in the season. Chambers has been able to step right in and produce for Kansas City, especially last week in the shocking win over the Pittsburgh Steelers when he had four receptions for 119 yards. With Dwayne Bowe suspended for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy, Chambers will continue to be the main target for the Chiefs. Even after Bowe returns you can expect Chambers to be featured in the offense. Because the Chiefs offense hasn’t shown the ability to be consistent from week to week, Chambers should only be considered for 12-team or deeper leagues.

Mohamed Massaquoi (Cleveland Browns)

Cleveland rookie Mohamed Massaquoi is starting to receive consistent playing time in the second half of the season and last week in the loss to the Detroit Lions he took advantage of that as he had five catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Brady Quinn appeared to be targeting him often and if it weren’t for some bad throws by Quinn then Massaquoi probably would’ve ended up with even more catches than he had. Since no other receiver has shown they are ready to step up we would expect Massaquoi to be featured regularly in the offense for the rest of the season. However, considering that he plays in the Browns offense, which, aside from the loss to Detroit, is clearly the worst in the league, Massaquoi should only be targeted in deeper leagues.

TIGHT ENDS - PICK THEM UP

Jermichael Finley (Green Bay Packers)

Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley has returned from his knee injury that kept him sidelined for the previous three games and he was involved in the offense right away. In the win over the San Francisco 49ers Finley caught seven passes for 54 yards. Finley was one the hot players at his position entering the season as he moved up fantasy football owner’s draft boards, and now we’re beginning to see why. Finley is a great talent that the Packers would love to get more involved in the offense to take away pressure from receivers Donald Driver and Greg Jennings. It also helps that Finley will often find himself in favorable matchups against linebackers that are slower than him. If you’re hurting at the tight end position, Finley is definitely worth a look.

Zach Miller (Oakland Raiders)

The Oakland Raiders finally decided to make a switch at quarterback as they replaced JaMarcus Russell with Bruce Gradkowski. The move paid off as Gradkowski helped lead the Raiders to a win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week, and it also boosts the value of Oakland’s top pass-catching threat, which is tight end Zach Miller. Miller has the surest hands on the team and is one of the more talented players at his position in the league but has been stuck with Russell as his quarterback. Last week with Gradkowski at the helm Miller caught five passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. He should see more production through the rest of the season, but being on the Raiders offense he might not see too many touchdowns. If that is something you can deal with then he would make a fine yardage play replacement at tight end.

Visanthe Shiancoe (Minnesota Vikings)

What isn’t there to like about Minnesota Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe? He plays on a good offense with a quarterback in Brett Favre who has playing at an MVP level all season, and Shiancoe also happens to catch a lot of touchdowns. Similar to last season, Shiancoe isn’t catching a ton of passes but when the Vikings get near the end zone it’s Shiancoe who they target. Last week in the win over the Seattle Seahawks, Shiancoe had eight receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown, giving him seven scores on the season. Opposing teams like to focus on running back Adrian Peterson and wide receiver Sidney Rice, meaning Shiancoe will often be in a favorable matchup. It’s likely Shiancoe will end up with double digit touchdowns, and there’s not much more you can ask for out of the tight end position. With Shiancoe being available in over 20 percent of Yahoo! and ESPN leagues, he’s definitely worth looking at.

What league are u in that doesn’t have Shiancoe owned? I never thought a 6 team league would be any fun…

Greg,

Thanks for the comment. This has nothing to do with leagues that we are in or 6,8,10,12 team leagues for that matter.

The fact is many owners’ don’t see value in carrying two tight ends and they fall in love with their option which makes valuable players like Shiancoe available on the waiver wire.

Because of this Shiancoe is available in over 30 percent of ESPN standard leagues and 19 percent of Yahoo! standard leagues.

I agree though, six team leagues are boring because everyone has a all-star team and there is no thinking that goes into making your lineup each week.
