Jason Hill (San Francisco 49ers)

Now that Alex Smith has taken over at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, the passing game has seen a boost, and benefiting from that are the receivers. Josh Morgan was a popular pickup last week, but let’s not forget about Jason Hill, a guy that caught 30 passes last year in a very weak offense. Before week 9, Hill had yet to catch a pass all season but against the Tennessee Titans, he had four receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns. As teams focus on Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis in the red zone, Hill should continue to find himself in some favorable match-ups. Still, because it is the 49ers’ offense and other guys are ahead of him, Hill should only be looked at in deeper leagues.

James Jones (Green Bay Packers)

Similar to Henderson, Jones is a game-breaker with blazing speed who just doesn’t see the ball enough. He started out with just three catches in the first four games, and still only has 11 on the year. Four of those came this past week in the loss to the Buccaneers as Jones went for 103 yards and a touchdown. However, in another similarity with Henderson, Jones finds himself low in the pecking order as he’s behind Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and, when healthy, Jermichael Finley. For now, he should only be considered in deeper leagues, but the fact that he’s got three touchdowns on 11 catches is very intriguing.

Lance Long (Kansas City Chiefs)

As mentioned earlier, not a whole lot has gone right for the Chiefs this season, especially on offense. Kansas City is looking to get anything going, and the discover of consistent options can help that. Wide receiver Lance Long looks like he might start to figure into the plans for the Chiefs. After catching his first two passes of the season two weeks ago, Long had eight receptions for 74 yards in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Because the Kansas City offense is so inconsistent, it may be best to just consider Long in deep leagues for now, but eight catches in one game can’t be ignored. At the very least, keep a watchful eye on Long.

Robert Meachem (New Orleans Saints)

You’ll see a trend emerging as Meachem, much like Henderson and Jones above, is a talented guy who just hasn’t had much of an opportunity yet. Until week 9, he hadn’t caught more than two passes in a game this season. That changed in the win over the Carolina Panthers as Meachem had five receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown. Considering that Colston is the only receiver guaranteed points in the New Orleans offense, Meachem should only be considered in deeper leagues or in very desperate situations.

TIGHT ENDS - PICK THEM UP

Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit Lions)

Detroit Lions’ tight end, Brandon Pettigrew, had the breakout game of his rookie season this past week in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks as he had seven catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Considering he’s dealing with a rookie quarterback in Matthew Stafford, it wouldn’t be surprising to see those two develop a good rapport. Pettigrew is an extremely talented player, but as we’ve seen in the past, rookie tight ends tend to be very inconsistent. If you can deal with that inconsistency, as well as having a rookie quarterback throwing him the ball, then Pettigrew is your guy.

KICKERS - PICK THEM UP

Jason Hanson (Detroit Lions)

So, he’s on a bad team and stuck behind a bad offense, but you have to remember that Detroit kicker Jason Hanson is one of the best in the league. And, though, the Lions’ offense won’t be lighting up the scoreboard anytime soon, they are starting to move the ball better. As the Lions should struggle once they get inside and close to the red zone, expect more opportunities for Hanson. He is a good guy to play the match-ups with if you like to do that with your kickers.

Matt Stover (Indianapolis Colts)

A knee injury has kept Indianapolis Colts’ kicker, Adam Vinatieri, out of action since week five, and right now, his return is up in the air. In his place, the Colts have gone with veteran kicker Matt Stover, who has hit all six field goals he’s attempted. Knowing how good the Colts offense is, Stover is worth owning in any league. However, the one thing that might limit his value is that the Colts are so good at scoring touchdowns, he may be limited to extra points some weeks.
