16. Matt Prater (Denver Broncos) @ Washington
The Redskins do sport an ugly 2-6 record, highlighted by losses to the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs. But, while the team is bad, that’s more due to their offense, which is averaging just a shade over 14 points a game than it is their defense, which has actually been fairly solid on the year, giving up just 19.2 points per contest. As a result, Prater isn’t as enticing an option as one might originally think, especially since the Broncos are having difficulties on the offensive side of the ball of late.
Point Projection: 7 points
17. Joe Nedney (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Chicago
With the San Francisco 49ers playing from behind of late and the offense struggling at times it has led to mediocrity from Nedney. He did have 10 fantasy points in a Week 9 loss to the Tennessee Titans but in his previous four outings the southpaw kicker could muster just 14 fantasy points. In Week 10, against the Chicago Bears, we project the 49ers to move the football but a few stalled drives should lead to two field goals to go along with 2-3 extra points. Consider Nedney a solid, yet unspectacular, start this week.
Point Projection: 7 points
18. Jeff Reed (Pittsburgh Steelers) vs. Cincinnati
Reed hasn’t been able to reach the double digit plateau yet this season; however, he has posted a handful of solid 7 and 9 fantasy point performances, five to be exact. He’ll make it six following this week’s match-up with a Bengals, a team he posted 7 fantasy points against in week 3. Consider Reed to be a decent option for week 10, but not the greatest.
Point Projection: 7 points
19. Robbie Gould (Chicago Bears) @ San Francisco
After scoring 33 fantasy points over the first four games Gould has had a tough time scoring fantasy football points over the last four games. With the Chicago Bears offense lacking consistency it has led to Gould totaling just 21 fantasy points since the Bears’ Week 5 bye and the veteran kicker has converted on just four field goals during that span. The San Francisco 49ers have allowed opponents to attempt 16 field goals over their first eight games so Gould should get his kicking chances but his lack of production make him a risky Week 10 play.
Point Projection: 7 points
20. Neil Rackers (Arizona Cardinals) vs. Seattle
In week 9, Rackers posted his first double digit outing of the season since a 12 point showing in week 1 as the Cardinals’ kicker tallied 12 yet again, this time against the Chicago Bears. The Seattle Seahawks have allowed 8 or more fantasy points to opposing kickers in each of their last three games, one of which was against Rackers, who notched 9. Consider the 7 points we have Rackers penciled in for more a conservative projection.
Point Projection: 7 points
21. Steven Hauschka (Baltimore Ravens) @ Cleveland
Hauschka followed up his best fantasy showing on the year, a 13 point effort in week 8, with his worst, a goose egg in week 9. In week 10, expect the Ravens’ kicker to fall right in the middle of those two weeks. The Browns are allowing opposing kickers 7.6 fantasy points per game, and we expect Hauschka to be around that average on Sunday.
Point Projection: 7 points
22. Jason Hanson (Detroit Lions) @ Minnesota
What’ amazing about Hanson’s 18 year tenure is that he has been a member of the Lions’ since day 1. Make no mistake, Hanson is not the elite kicker that he once was but he still boasts a big leg and has knocked down six field goal attempts of 40 or more yards. If kicking chances were easier to come by Hanson would be a suggested weekly start but with the Lions offense continuing to struggle you can’t rely on Hanson being a lineup staple.
Point Projection: 6 points
23. Josh Brown (St. Louis Rams) vs. New Orleans
With the Rams playing in two close games over the last three it has led to Josh Brown getting some kicking chances. The veteran has made five field goals over his last three games and 60-percent of those have been from beyond 40 yards. Even with the increase in action of late it’s still not wise to start Brown against a New Orleans Saints that leads the NFL in scoring. In all reality, the Rams will need touchdowns to keep up with the Saints thus at some point limiting the opportunity Brown has to kick three pointers.
Point Projection: 6 points
24. John Kasay (Carolina Panthers) vs. Atlanta
Kasay does have seven field goal chances over the past month but the fact that he has missed three of those is far from encouraging. In a Week 2 meeting against the Atlanta Falcons Kasay did have a 10 point fantasy outing which is a season high, but it’s tough to rely on a kicker who has just 11 FG attempts in eight games with only four of those from 40 or more yards. The Falcons have been stubborn at limiting teams FG chances and don’t expect that to change this week.
Point Projection: 6 points
25. Rian Lindell (Buffalo Bills) @ Tennessee
After a slow start, Lindell has picked it up of late and he has nailed all but one of his last eight field goal attempts. However, with the Bills offense struggling and the Tennessee Titans defense surging this could be one of those weeks in which Lindell is limited a a FG attempt or two to go along with an extra point. Until Buffalo can start scoring points in bunches there are too many kickers that are worth rolling with over Lindell. Keep him reserved in Week 10.
Point Projection: 6 points
26. Connor Barth (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @ Miami
Taking over for Shane Andrus in Week 9, Barth made 1 of 2 field goal attempts and also kicked in three extra points. Not great stats, but a vast improvement from the past kickers in Tampa Bay. In case you forgot, Barth is now the fourth kicker the Buccaneers have had on their roster this season and hopefully the last. The Miami Dolphins have allowed opponents to attempt a league high 23 field goals through eight games but even after a big Week 9 showing it’s tough to predict the Tampa Bay offense to be involved in many scoring pays..
Point Projection: 5 points
27. Shayne Graham (Cincinnati Bengals) @ Pittsburgh
There used to be a time when Graham was a must start fantasy football kicker but those days are long gone. Graham has made just 7 of 10 field goals this year and has 16 extra points through eight games. The veteran kicker has yet to score double-digit fantasy points in any games this season and is averaging just 5 points per game. A Week 10 match-up against a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that is tops in the league at defending the kicker is not the time to be gamble on Graham.
Point Projection: 5 points
28. Josh Scobee (Jacksonville Jaguars) @ New York Jets
Jaguars’ head coach Jack Del Rio has no problem running out his kicker for 50+ yard field goal attempts and this is evident by Scobee’s six attempts from 50 yards and beyond. However, the strong legged kicker has nailed just two of those attempts and has only 10 fantasy points over the last four games. With the Jaguars offense sputtering of late and the Meadowlands being a tough place to kick for away teams we don’t recommend you consider Scobee in Week 10. Plus, the New York Jets give up just 5.8 points per game to the kicker position and have allowed just 11 FG attempts over eight games.
Point Projection: 4 points
29. Shaun Suisham (Washington Redskins) vs. Denver
The problem with Suisham hasn’t been his accuracy, as he is a perfect 10 of 10 on field goal attempts, it’s his team inability to score points. The Redskins average just 14.1 points per game and have yet to score 20 points in a single game. Suisham has just two games this year in which he has kicked more than one FG and that’s not what you want from your starting kicker in fantasy football.
Point Projection: 4 points
30. Phil Dawson (Cleveland Browns) vs. Baltimore
It’s tough to suggest you start a kicker from an offense that scores just 9.8 points per game and averages just 221 yards per game. Even if Dawson was on the leagues best kickers, which he’s not, we still wouldn’t suggest you use him. Expect the Baltimore Ravens to get up early and for Dawson to kick a meaningless field goal to prevent the shutout and not much else. The only way he has fantasy relevance is if for some reason the Ravens’ look past this game and start thinking about the Indianapolis Colts in Week 11.
Point Projection: 3 points
WEEK 10 BYE WEEK KICKERS
Lawrence Tynes (New York Giants) - With the New York Giants offense struggling to find the end zone on a consistent basis it has led to plenty of field goal chances for Tynes. Through nine games, Tynes has converted on 19 of 23 field goals to go along with 25 extra points. He is averaging over nine fantasy points per contest and is leading all kickers in points through the first half of the season. Continue to plug Tynes into your lineup until the weather in New York becomes an issue, which could be any week now. Once that happens monitor the conditions closely.
Kris Brown (Houston Texans) - Field goal attempts haven’t been as frequent for Brown in 2009 but a large part of that has to do with the fact that the Houston Texans offense is scoring touchdowns at a higher percentage this year. Brown has made 10 field goals (two over 50 yards) and booted 25 extra points but he hasn’t been the reliable kicking option that we projected him to be. Use him as a match-up play moving forward.
