RUNNING BACKS - START ‘EM
Rashard Mendenhall (Pittsburgh Steelers) vs. New York Jets
Mendenhall carried the ball 20 times for a meager 46 yards and caught one ball for for 13 yards against the Baltimore Ravens last week, however he found the end zone twice on the ground to save his fantasy day. He’s found the end zone six times since Week 15. Althought yardage might be hard to come by again on Sunday when Mendenhalls faces the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game, there is reason for optimism. When the two teams met back in Week 15, Mendenhall rushed for 99 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown against the Jets. Expect the third year back to get a lot of touches, as both teams are likely to play the game close to the vest. Moreover, weather and field conditions could be factors that inhibit offensive imagination. Given the limited number of players available at this stage of the playoffs, Mendenhall stands out despite a tough matchup.
Matt Forte (Chicago Bears) vs. Green Bay
Forte had 25 carries for 80 yards and three catches for 54 yards against the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round, but he did lose chances to score as Chicago Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler ran for two scores and backfield running mate Chester Taylor also found the end zone. Despite the lack of scoring opportunities last week, things look promising for Forte when the Bears take on the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship. In the most recent matchup in Week 17, Forte had 15 carries for 91 yards along with eight receptions for 60 yards in the game. Chicago should continue to make him a primary part of the game plan this week. Moreover, Forte’s ability as a receiver only enhances his fantasy potential. The possibility the he continues to lose goal line carries is a concern, however the yardage Forte has put up recently is enough to make him a must-start in playoff formats.
