Chicago Bears running back Marion Barber has decided to retire, the team announced on its website Friday.

“I want to thank everyone who gave me the opportunity to play, and I'm very thankful to have had the chance to suit up for two of the NFL's most storied organizations,” Barber said on the team website.

Barber rushed for 422 yards and six touchdowns last season behind starting running back Matt Forte.

The Bears signed running back Michael Bush to a four-year, $14 million contract Thursday, which may have influenced Barber's decision to call it a career.

The 28-year-old was a Pro Bowl selection in 2007 when he played for the Dallas Cowboys and never ran for more than 1,000 yards in a season.
