FANTASY FOOTBALL WEEK 5 STARTS:  QB  |  RB  |  WR  |  TE  |  K  |  DEF

Batten down the hatches, it’s Week 5 of the 2012 NFL season, and we’re entering our first big bye week. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts were off last week, but with the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers all off this week, fantasy rosters are changing drastically, owners are swapping players, and difficult decisions are being made. We’re here to help you with those final decisions before you submit your lineup. Also be sure to check out our Week 5 Waiver Wire Savior , Waiver Wire Cut List articles, and Long-Term Investing Articles.

Here are our “Fantasy Football Start ‘Ems” for Week 5 of the 2012 season. As a reminder, everyone knows to start elite players like Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson, and LeSean McCoy, so when we compile our list we make sure to focus on serviceable players that will benefit from a favorable matchup.

TEAM DEFENSE–START ’EM

New York Giants vs. Cleveland Browns

The G-Men haven’t kept many of their opponents from scoring points, but the Browns offense is still young even though their quarterback turns 29 next week. Brandon Weeden has improved significantly since Week 1, however he is still making rookie mistakes and his receivers (Greg Little for one) are dropping too many passes. Weeden is completing just 53.9% of his passes–that’s an alarming number! There’s an excellent chance the Browns come out slow once again. Should the Giants pour on the points, that will force the Browns to become one-dimensional, giving the defense a chance to rush Weeden and force turnovers.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Tennessee Titans

It’s easy to look at the play of Christian Ponder, the return of Adrian Peterson or the electricity of Percy Harvin as the reason the Vikings are 3-1 but it’s the defense that’s held preseason favorites like the 49ers and Lions to 13 points each. They are tied for seventh in sacks (12) and have an exceptional run defense. And don’t forget that the Vikings defense scores points whenever Harvin returns a kick 105 yards to the house. Look for another disappointing week from Chris Johnson and a long day for whoever plays quarterback for the Titans.
