FANTASY FOOTBALL WEEK 2 STARTS:  QB  |  RB  |  WR  |  TE  |  K  |  DEF

It’s Week 2 of the 2012 NFL season, and what a week we had to start the season! We saw a jaw-dropping debut from Robert Griffin III, the New England Patriots are reloaded, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to have a hard-hitting defense again. We finally got to see several teams and players in action who we had several questions about going into this season, but be careful not to overreact after one week.

Here are our “Fantasy Football Start ‘Ems” for Week 2 of the 2012 season. As a reminder, everyone knows to start elite players like Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson, and LeSean McCoy, so when we compile our list we make sure to focus on serviceable players that will benefit from a favorable matchup.

WIDE RECEIVERS–START’EM

Lance Moore (New Orleans Saints) at Carolina

Moore was one of three receivers targeted at least 10 times by Drew Brees. The Saints played from behind most of the game, and looked desperate; that’s a key component as to why Brees threw the ball 52 times against the ‘Skins. But with Robert Meachem leaving in free agency and an injury to Devery Henderson that left the once crowded receiving corps of New Orleans very clear. Marques Colston is always going to draw the best cornerback and Moore is going to get the leftovers. The Panthers gave up 28 touchdowns through the air last season and nearly 250 yards per game. They looked improved last week but Josh Freeman is a far cry from Brees.

Percy Harvin (Minnesota Vikings) at Indianapolis

Whether it’s changing the pace from Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart, pushing the ball up the field with a long kick return, or leading the team in targets and receptions, Harvin is a must-start against the defenseless Colts. If you’re in a PPR league that scores return yards it’s hard to beat Harvin’s versatility or the amount he touches the ball, even if your nickname is “All Day.”

Demaryius Thomas (Denver Broncos) at Atlanta

Many questioned about the timing Thomas had with Peyton Manning but he was targeted as many times as teammate Eric Decker in Week 1 and all the cards are in Thomas’ favor in Week 2. The Falcons suffered a massive loss when All-Pro cornerback Brett Grimes tore his Achilles’ tendon. One team’s misfortune is another’s opportunity and that gaping hole should give Thomas some extra space to stretch the defense and make a play. We all saw how Thomas turned a short pass into a 71-yard touchdown run, so everything is set for another big performance.

Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Minnesota

Tied for the most targets in Week 1 with Darren McFadden, Wayne had Andrew Luck’s eye 18 times, and brought back the glory days of the Colts when Peyton Manning was there. He should have similar success with the Vikings who did little to slow down Blaine Gabbert and the Jaguars.

POTENTIAL WR SLEEPER PICK OF THE WEEK

Jason Avant (Philadelphia Eagles) vs. Baltimore

With Jeremy Maclin’s status up in the air, DeSean Jackson becomes the primary target for Michael Vick, who often takes what the defenses give him; just look at his 56 attempts last week against Cleveland and his 5.7-yard average. The Ravens will shift the coverage towards Jackson. That leaves secondary options like Brent Celek and Avant open. Every season Avant has two or three weeks with low-end WR1 numbers and the conditions are ripe for such a game.
