WEEK 7 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
Can you believe we are almost halfway through the season already? What’s the most surprising wide receiver story so far this season? Could it be the fact that Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson haven’t hooked up for one touchdown this season? Could it be the fact that A.J. Green has entered the elite receiver club so early in his career? What about Randy Moss? Will he belittle another caterer before all is set and done? There are so many questions, but a crucial stretch for fantasy football owners is coming up that separates the good teams from the teams that already are checking out early fantasy baseball statistics. Every week matters and this week is no different, especially with six teams on a bye this week.
Who will be among the top scoring wide receivers this week? Read our fantasy football Week 7 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Rankings below to gain an advantage over your friends and competitors alike.
::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 18, 2012::
1. A.J. Green (Cincinnati Bengals) vs. Pittsburgh
As Jon Gruden would say “This kid is special.” The Cleveland Browns didn’t have much luck in their second opportunity to contain Green as Green caught seven passes for 135 yards and scored two touchdowns. It has been a magnificent start of the season for Green who has 43 receptions for 628 yards and has scored six touchdowns through six games. Starting to show their age on the defensive side of the ball, the Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled against the wide receiver position at times this season surrendering 19.3 fantasy points to the wide receiver position and allowing a decent performance from Kenny Britt in Week 6 (four receptions, 62 yards and a touchdown). Expect Green, who had seven catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense last season, to continue to make his fantasy owners look smart.
Point Projection: 16 points
2. Victor Cruz (New York Giants) vs. Washington
There was Salsa dancing in Candlestick Park on Sunday. Cruz had six catches for 58 yards and scored a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. There seems to be no defense that can contain Cruz this season. Over the New York Giants last three games, Cruz has 20 receptions for 217 yards and has scored five touchdowns. Cruz didn’t have much luck against the Washington Redskins in Week 15 last season (five receptions for 44 yards). However, the Washington Redskins have allowed the most fantasy points (32.5) to the wide receiver position this season. Cruz is a terrific WR1 this week.
Point Projection: 16 points
3. Brandon Marshall (Chicago Bears) vs. Detroit
Unlike in Miami, the Brandon Marshall experiment is working like a charm for the Chicago Bears this season. Being reunited with Jay Cutler, Marshall has three 100 yard plus receiving games and has scored three touchdowns this season. Look for Marshall to take advantage of a patchwork Detroit Lions secondary that has allowed an average of 21.0 fantasy points to the wide receiver position this season. Marshall is a strong WR1 this week.
Point Projection: 16 points

4. Calvin Johnson (Detroit Lions) @ Chicago
The touchdown drought continues. Johnson caught six passes for 135 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. He nearly had a touchdown, but was called for offensive pass interference on a push off. The Chicago Bears present a stiff challenge for Johnson considering they have allowed an average of 17.4 fantasy points to the wide receiver position this season. However, Johnson played terrifically against the Chicago Bears in two games last season (12 receptions for 211 yards in two games). Matthew Stafford’s struggling is a concern for Johnson owners, but he will continue to receive plenty of targets and has been productive against terrific defenses already this season (San Francisco, Philadelphia, etc…).
Point Projection: 16 points
5. Wes Welker (New England Patriots) vs. New York Jets
Is there any defense that could contain the slot machine? The answer appears to be no. Welker had 10 receptions for 138 yards and scored a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6. The performance marked Welker’s fourth straight game of 100 plus receiving yards and he has an outstanding 40 catches in that span. Welker had mixed results against the New York Jets last season (11 receptions for 170 yards in two games). However, he was covered in those games by stellar New York Jets cornerback, Darrelle Revis. Since Revis will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, Welker could have a field day this week against his replacement Kyle Wilson. Even though this isn’t the best defensive matchup on paper for Welker, he has the ability to shine against any defense.
Point Projection: 15 points
6. Percy Harvin (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Arizona
The only headaches that relate to Hardin now are the ones he gives to opposing defensive coordinators. Hardin had 11 catches for 133 yards against the Washington Redskins in Week 6. This marks back-to-back impressive performances for Minnesota Vikings Swiss Army Knife. He has 19 catches for 241 yards and has scored a touchdown over the Minnesota Vikings last two games. After getting off to a good start the Arizona Cardinals have struggled against the pass over their last three games, which included an incredible performance from Miami Dolphins wide receiver, Brian Hartline (12 receptions, 253 yards and a touchdown). Look for Harvin, who has received an incredible 62 targets this season, to have another impressive game this week.
Point Projection: 15 points
7. Marques Colston (New Orleans Saints) @ Tampa Bay
Are you sure this guy has plantar fasciitis? After lying dormant for the first three games of the season, Colston had two monster games going into the New Orleans Saints bye week, catching a combined 18 passes for 284 yards and four touchdowns. It’s possible Colston could continue his torrid pace against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that has allowed the seventh most fantasy points (25.6) to the wide receiver position this season. Colston, who had 12 receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown in two games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, is a solid WR1 this week.
Point Projection: 14 points
8. Mike Wallace (Pittsburgh Steelers) @ Cincinnati
Is there anything this guy can’t do? Wallace caught two passes for 94 yards and a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans in Week 6. Despite only being targeted four times, Wallace put together his third 13 plus fantasy point performance of the season. The Cincinnati Bengals have had issues with their banged up secondary and those issues showed up against a mediocre Cleveland Browns receiving core in Week 6 (156 receiving yards and a touchdown). Look for Wallace, who had two receiving touchdowns against the Cincinnati Bengals last season, to have another nice game this week.
Point Projection: 14 points
9. Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals) @ Minnesota
Could there be another Larry Legend? Fitzgerald caught six passes for 93 yards and scored a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. It’s been a stellar start to the season for Fitzgerald. He has 31 receptions for 363 yards and three touchdowns over the last four games. The Minnesota Vikings pass defense has been pretty good this season and have allowed only two touchdowns to the wide receiver position. However, Fitzgerald can be a handful for any defense as he has burned a solid Philadelphia Eagles defense and an emerging St. Louis Rams one this season. Expect another nice performance from Fitzgerald this week.Point Projection: 14 points
10. Vincent Jackson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. New Orleans Saints
Jackson had a big game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6, catching four passes for 66 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Josh Freeman’s improved play over the last two Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ games has reflected in Jackson’s statistics. Jackson has 10 receptions for 166 yards and has scored three touchdowns over the last two games. The New Orleans Saints have struggled against the quarterback position this season allowing the seventh most fantasy points to the position (19.4). The New Orleans Sainst have also struggled against the wide receiver position, allowing an average of 27.8 fantasy points per game to the position. If Josh Freeman has a good game, Jackson will likely follow suit. The stars seem aligned for Jackson to have a nice game this week.
Point Projection: 14 points
11. Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Cleveland
Wayne caught five passes for 87 yards against New York Jets in Week 6. It wasn’t as big a game as projected for Wayne, who didn’t have room to breath battling Antonio Cromarte, but it was a respectable performance for his fantasy owners. Look for Wayne to receive double digit targets against a Cleveland Browns’ team that has allowed the second most fantasy points (31.7) to the wide receiver position this season. Expect Wayne to have a stronger game against a Cleveland Browns’ team that was burned by A.J. Green in Week 5.
Point Projection: 14 points
12. Hakeem Nicks (New York Giants) vs. Washington
Nicks caught three passes for 44 yards against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. He clearly wasn’t 100% in the game, but he may be closer to that mark by the time the New York Giants play the Washington Redskins this week. Nicks feasted on the Washington Redskins defense last season catching 12 passes for 195 yards in two games. The Washington Redskins have also allowed nine touchdowns to the wide receiving position this season and have had to deal with some debilitating injuries to their secondary. Look for Nicks to have a better game this week.
Point Projection: 13 points
13. Andre Johnson (Houston Texans) vs. Baltimore
Johnson had eight catches for 75 yards against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. It was a nice bounce back game for Johnson, who had only one catch for 15 yards in Week 5. It has been a hit or miss season for Johnson so far with three games of 70 plus yards receiving and three games with 50 receiving yards or less. Johnson has a chance to put together a nice game against a Baltimore Ravens’ team that has recently been decimated by injuries on defense, including a season ending injury to their stud cornerback, Lardarius Webb. Look for Johnson to take advantage of a Baltimore Ravens team that allowed 24 fantasy points to the Dallas Cowboys receiving core in Week 6.
Point Projection: 13 points
14. Dez Bryant (Dallas Cowboys) @ Carolina Panthers
What took you so long? Bryant had his much anticipated and long awaited monster game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6, catching 13 passes for 95 yards and scoring two touchdowns. The bye week appeared to cure what ailed Bryant this season, as he now has 17 receptions for 200 yards and two touchdowns over the Dallas Cowboys’ last two games. The Carolina Panthers have struggled mightily to the wide receivers over their past two games, allowing 350 yards and three touchdowns to the position, which bodes well for the emerging Bryant. Look for Bryant to continue to see heavy targets and be a disruptive force in this game.
Point Projection: 13 points
15. Miles Austin (Dallas Cowboys) @ Carolina Panthers
Austin had two receptions for 31 yards against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6. He was only targeted five times as Dez Bryant received whopping 17 targets. The middling performance broke a streak of four straight performances that Austin scored 10 fantasy points or more. Expect Austin to bounce back against a struggling Carolina Panthers pass defense that has allowed four touchdowns to the wide receiver position this season. Austin is a solid WR2 this week.
Point Projection: 12 points

16. Jordy Nelson (Green Bay Packers) @ St. Louis
Do you feel better Nelson owners? Bouncing back from a miserable Week 5, Nelson had a monster game against the Houston Texans, catching nine passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Aaron Rodgers was at his absolute best on Sunday night and Nelson was able to burn both Kareem Jackson and Jonathan Joseph for touchdowns. The St. Louis Rams have allowed the second least fantasy points (14.7) to the wide receiver position this season, which makes this week challenging for Nelson. Also, St. Louis Rams terrific corner, Cortland Finnegan who has smothered wide receivers this season will likely cover Nelson. However, Nelson will likely continue to receive plenty of targets and is capable of making great athletic catches, like the ones he had against the Houston Texans in Week 6. Even in this tough matchup Nelson is a solid WR2 this week.
Point Projection: 12 points
17. Kenny Britt (Tennessee Titans) @ Buffalo
The ankle looked like it was feeling a bit better on Thursday night as Britt caught four passes for 62 yards and scored a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was by no means a great game for Britt as he had several dropped passes and ran the wrong routes on some plays, but he received more experience and improved from last week. Britt maybe in luck this week, considering the Buffalo Bills defense seems to be the remedy for many slumping receivers this season. The Buffalo Bills have allowed the fifth most fantasy points to the wide receiver position this season (27.3). Look for Britt to continue to receive a high volume of targets and put together a nice game this week.
Point Projection: 11 points
18. Steve Johnson (Buffalo Bills) vs. Tennessee
Johnson caught six passes for 82 yards against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. It was disappointing Johnson couldn’t find the end zone for the third straight game, but he led the team in targets (11), receptions (6) and yardage (82). Johnson has been a solid WR2 this year averaging 4.5 catches and 52.6 yards per game and has a chance to pad those statistics against the Tennessee Titans. Johnson had five receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans last season and the Tennessee Titans have also allowed an average of 20.2 fantasy points to the wide receiver position this season. Johnson is a solid WR2 this week.
Point Projection: 11 points
19. James Jones (Green Bay Packers) @ St. Louis
Is there any player in the league who is as lucky and good as Jones is right now? Jones caught three passes for 33 yards and scored two touchdowns in Week 6 against the Houston Texans. Jones became the first player since the great Don Hudson to score two touchdowns per game for three consecutive weeks. It has been especially impressive that Jones has scored his six touchdowns with only 12 receptions in three games. It seem unlikely Jones will continue his streak against a St. Louis Rams’ team that has only allowed two touchdowns to the wide receiver position this season. However, he certainly has a chance at hitting pay dirt this week, considering how hot the Green Bay Packers offense has been. Jones is a gamble this week, but saying that he has been on a role lately would be an understatement.
Point Projection: 11 points
20. Antonio Brown (Pittsburgh Steelers) @ Cincinnati
Brown couldn’t get much going against the Tennessee Titans in Week 6, catching only four passes for 20 yards. The performance marked an end to four seven plus fantasy point performances for Brown this season. Look for Brown to bounce back against a Cincinnati Bengals’ team he had 11 receptions for 153 yards against last season. Brown, who has received double-digit targets in each of the past four Pittsburgh Steelers’ games, is a solid WR2 this week.
Point Projection: 10 points
21. Torrey Smith (Baltimore Ravens) @ Houston
It wasn’t a strong bounce back game for Smith, but he was productive in fantasy circles. Smith caught two passes for 24 yards and scored a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. Joe Flacco only attempted 26 passes, which could be attributed to Smith’s low target total (5). Smith had mixed results against the Houston Texans last season totaling four receptions for 93 yards in two games. However, the Houston Texans are reeling a bit after allowing a total of 55 fantasy points in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers. Even in a tough matchup, Smith has played well enough to be a recommended WR2 this week.
Point Projection: 10 points
22. Brandon Lloyd (New England Patriots) vs. New York Jets
It appears Lloyd has a strong chance to play this week against the New York Jets after sustaining a shoulder injury against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6. A relief for Lloyd’s fantasy owners, who saw Lloyd catch six passes for 80 yards against the Seattle Seahawks. The odds seem stacked against Lloyd this week, likely being defended by stud cornerback, Antonio Cromarte and playing a New York Jets defense that has allowed the least fantasy points to the wide receiver position this season (14.7). The New England Patriots strong offense will likely still open up some opportunities for Lloyd, but the chances of a great performance seem slim.
Point Projection: 9 points
23. Steve Smith (Carolina Panthers) vs. Dallas
It hasn’t been the terrific season that it was last season for Smith, but it has been a good one to this point. Smith has averaged 4.2 receptions and 77.6 yards per game, but he has not scored a touchdown this season after scoring seven touchdowns last season. It doesn’t seem likely that Smith will score his first touchdown this week against a Dallas Cowboys’ team that has allowed the fourth least fantasy points (15.7) to the wide receiver position this season. Smith certainly has a chance to be productive this week, but will likely have some trouble being defended by solid cornerback, Brandon Carr.
Point Projection: 9 points
24. Denarius Moore (Oakland Raiders) vs. Jacksonville
Hamstring injury? What hamstring injury? Moore caught five receptions for 104 yards and scored a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. It was a nice game for Moore, who has looked good over the Oakland Raiders last three games (nine receptions for 220 yards and a touchdown). Moore is a risky play most weeks because he is primarily a deep threat, but he has a solid chance to burn a Jacksonville Jaguars’ team that has allowed 79 fantasy points to the wide receiver position over their last three games. Moore is a nice looking WR3 this week.
Point Projection: 9 points
25. Mike Williams (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. New Orleans
Welcome back to the party Tampa Bay Mike. After a slow start to the season Williams has really picked it up over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last two games, catching eight passes for 228 yards and a touchdown. Williams performed decently against the New Orleans Saints last season (12 receptions for 105 yards), but couldn’t quite complete the homerun play. However, this season the New Orleans Saints have been rancid against the pass, especially over their past two games allowing 433 yards and six touchdowns to the wide receiver position. Williams is a solid WR3 this week.
Point Projection: 9 points
