WEEK 7 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
We keep thinking it can’t get worse for fantasy football tight ends, but it does. In fact, it has almost every week of the season; here are the number of tight ends who have registered double-digit fantasy points from Week 1 through Week 6: 11, nine, eight, five, four, four. There were only seven touchdowns scored by tight ends in Week 6, which is two fewer than any previous week, and Week 6 was also the first in which no tight end reached at least 90 receiving yards. Translation – any fantasy football owner who won their match-up last week almost certainly didn’t do it because of their tight end, unless they were an Antonio Gates owner. Let’s see if things will improve this week in our Fantasy Football Week 7 Tight End Rankings.
::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19, 2012::
1. Rob Gronkowski (New England Patriots) vs. New York Jets
Gronkowski tied a season-high with six receptions in New England’s loss to Seattle, and had 61 receiving yards, but failed to score a touchdown for the third time in four weeks. He’s still having a good season, and is tied for fourth in fantasy points among tight ends, but isn’t putting up numbers that are good enough relevant to his likely draft position. But we think Gronk will start to climb the fantasy leaderboard at tight end this week against the Jets, who have allowed the sixth-most receiving yards and in eighth-most (tied) fantasy points per game in the league to tight ends.
Point Projection: 15 points
2. Jason Witten (Dallas Cowboys) @ Carolina
Witten led all tight ends in receiving yards this week, accumulating 88 on six receptions in the Cowboys loss to the Ravens. Two poor games have killed his place on the fantasy leaderboard, where he is 16th in fantasy scoring at the tight end position, but the last two weeks have been encouraging. Witten has caught 19 passes for 200 yards and a score in those contests, who faces a Panthers team that is tied for 11th-most fantasy points per game allowed to tight ends, and who has given up 50 or more receiving yards to players at the position in every game since Week 2.
Point Projection: 14 points
3. Jimmy Graham (New Orleans Saints) @ Tampa Bay
Graham and the Saints had their bye this week, and that, combined with his injury-marred performance in Week 5 that saw him catch one pass for four yards, made him plummet to eighth on the tight end leaderboard for fantasy points. If he’s healthy enough to play this week, we love him against the Bucs. Tampa is 31st in the league in pass defense, and Graham scorched them for 13 catches and 202 yards in two games last season.
Point Projection: 13 points

4. Aaron Hernandez (New England Patriots) vs. New York Jets
After four games away due to injury, Hernandez returned to the field last week and promptly caught a touchdown, though he could only manage 30 yards on six receptions. He had nine targets in the game, one more than Rob Gronkowski, which was a bit of a surprise because many people thought Hernandez would be worked into the team’s offense a bit more incrementally. But it’s good news for his fantasy owners, who can once again place him in their starting lineups.
Point Projection: 12 points
5. Kyle Rudolph (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Arizona
Rudolph’s 13 fantasy points were the second-most among tight ends this week, his 11 targets were the most, and his six catches were tied for the position-high. He added 56 receiving yards and a touchdown in Minnesota’s loss to the Redskins, and his five scores are now the most at his position and third-highest total in the NFL. Rudolph has a difficult match-up this week against the Cardinals, but he’s so good in the red zone we have no problems projecting another score for him.
Point Projection: 11 points
6. Vernon Davis (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Seattle
Like the rest of the 49ers offense, Davis was shut down by the Giants last week, and totaled three receptions for 37 yards, marking the second time in three weeks he had three or fewer fantasy points. He remains second at his position in fantasy points, and is fifth in receiving yards, but we’re not enamored with his match-up this week (or the team’s quarterback, to be honest). The Seahawks gave up more than 75 receiving yards to tight ends for the first time last week, and allowed their first touchdown to a player at the position in that game as well. Davis won’t be shut down, but we’re not expecting a monster game.
Point Projection: 9 points
7. Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit Lions) @ Chicago
Pettigrew was targeted seven times in Detroit’s overtime win over Philadelphia, but caught just three passes for 38 yards. He is tied for second among tight ends in targets for the season, but that hasn’t translated to much fantasy success, considering he is tied for 19th in scoring at the position. Still, Pettigrew has had three games of at least five catches and 60 yards, and if he can add some touchdowns to those numbers – like we think he will this week – fantasy owners will have themselves a TE1.
Point Projection: 9 points
8. Heath Miller (Pittsburgh Steelers) @ Cincinnati
Miller’s nine targets last week in the Steelers loss to the Titans were tied for third-most among tight ends, his six catches were tied for first and the 67 receiving yards he racked up was the fifth-highest total at his position. He’s sixth among tight ends in fantasy scoring this season, and owners should consider him a starter this week against a Bengals team that has allowed the fifth-most fantasy points per game in the league to tight ends.
Point Projection: 9 points
9. Owen Daniels (Houston Texans) vs. Baltimore
Daniels tied his season-low with three catches, and had 46 receiving yards, which was his second-lowest total of the year, during Houston’s loss to Green Bay. But on a team that relies on the run as heavily as the Texans, these games are prone to happen. This misstep shouldn’t shatter the confidence of fantasy owners in Daniels, as he’s still among the top-five at his position in most statistical categories, including the most important one, fantasy scoring. The Ravens are an interesting match-up for Daniels, because while they have yet to allow a touchdown to a tight end this season, only two other teams have given up more receiving yards to players at the position, so fantasy points are there for the taking.
Point Projection: 8 points
10. Martellus Bennett (New York Giants) vs. Washington
Bennett caught just a single pass for nine yards last week in New York’s win over San Francisco, and it was the second time in three weeks that he had one catch for less than 10 yards. Last week’s total can be partially contributed to the fact that New York ran the ball so much (37 times), and had little need to air it out. Bennett should be much better this week against the Redskins, who have the worst pass defense in the league, and have allowed the second-most fantasy points per game to tight ends.
Point Projection: 8 points
11. Scott Chandler (Buffalo Bills) vs. Tennessee
Chandler was targeted three times in Buffalo’s overtime win over Arizona, yet had just one reception for 12 feet. It was the third time in the last four games that he amassed two or fewer fantasy points, and despite the fact he is seventh at his position in fantasy points, we’re not particularly in love with a guy who has caught barely 50 percent of the balls thrown his way (17 out of 32). Some of that is on the quarterback of course, but Chandler is a hit-or-miss type, which is another characteristic we aren’t fond of. Still, fantasy owners have to consider him this week against a Titans team that is the worst in the NFL when it comes to fantasy points per game allowed to tight ends.
Point Projection: 7 points
12. Jermaine Gresham (Cincinnati Bengals) vs. Pittsburgh
After spending most of his career catching plenty of balls but gaining little ground, Gresham made a big play with a career-high 55-yard reception for a touchdown last week in the Bengals loss to the Browns. Gresham finished the game with three catches for 68 yards and that one score. He’s having a solid season, and among tight ends he ranks tied for fifth in receptions, seventh in receiving yards and ninth in fantasy points, all of which makes him a borderline starter each week.
Point Projection: 6 points

13. Fred Davis (Washington Redskins) @ New York Giants
Davis co-led the Redskins in receiving during their win over the Vikings, but it was with just 46 yards on three receptions. He didn’t score in the game, and has yet to find the end zone this season, which is a shame because he is sixth among tight ends in receiving yards. Unfortunately, we don’t think he’ll score his first touchdown this week either, not against a Giants team that has yet to allow a touchdown to a tight end this season, and who is allowing the third-fewest fantasy points per game to players at the position.
Point Projection: 6 points
14. Jared Cook (Tennessee Titans) @ Buffalo
Cook caught all four passes thrown to him during Tennessee’s surprising victory over Pittsburgh, gaining 54 yards in the process. He has a solid match-up with the Bills, who have allowed 100 receiving yards to tight ends in two of their last three games, but he doesn’t get the ball thrown to him often enough to really take advantage of the opposition.
Point Projection: 5 points
15. Greg Olsen (Carolina Panthers) vs. Dallas
Olsen and the Panthers were on their bye last week, so fantasy owners who dropped him can feel free to put him back on their rosters as their team’s back-up. He’s had a number of good games, is tied for 14th among tight ends in fantasy scoring and eighth in receiving yards. But his opponent this week, the Cowboys, have allowed the fifth-fewest receiving yards in the NFL to tight ends, and only once allowing at least 50.
Point Projection: 5 points
