WEEK 7 RANKINGS  QB  |  RB |  WR |  TE |  K | DEF

Now we enter the dreaded Week 7. Why is it so dreaded to fantasy football players? This is the only week of the NFL season that has more than four teams on bye weeks. Six teams will be watching games from the comfort of their living rooms this week, which means the player pool is the thinnest it will be all season. Just look at the quarterbacks on bye this week: Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick and Philip Rivers are the big names, and they are joined by Ryan Tannehill and Matt Cassel.

Also, depending on the format of the league in which you’re playing, Week 7 marks the beginning of the run for the playoffs. Six teams on bye? Yeah, what a terrific way to begin the playoff run. For the quarterbacks that are playing this week, we’ve got all 26 ranked in our Fantasy Football Week 7 Quarterback Rankings.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 16, 2012::

1. Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers) @ St. Louis

Remember when people panicked about Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers? The Packers still have some work to do as a team, but Rodgers was at his finest in last week’s blowout win over the Houston Texans. In that game Rodgers threw for 338 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. This is the Rodgers that we have been waiting for, and it came against one of the best defenses in the league. Of course it’s not reasonable to expect Rodgers to throw six touchdowns every game, but it’s a terrific sign to see Rodgers with 13 touchdowns and just two interceptions in his last three games. This week Rodgers and the Packers travel to St. Louis to face a Rams defense that’s been surprisingly strong against the pass having given up just two passing touchdowns in the last four weeks. Expect a more normal week from Rodgers, one that still puts him atop the weekly quarterback rankings.
Point Projection: 23 points

2. Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints) @ Tampa Bay

Coming off a bye week New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees appears poised for a huge game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brees’ two best games came in the two weeks leading up to the when he threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns in Week 4 and then 370 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in Week 5. Now he’s had two weeks to prepare for a Buccaneers defense that cannot defend against the pass. Tampa ranks 31st in the league in passing yards allowed per game. The Buccaneers haven’t given up a passing touchdown since Week 2 but consider in their last three games they faced Brady Quinn, Robert Griffin for only a portion of a game and a struggling Tony Romo. This defense cannot stop good quarterbacks, just look at what Eli Manning did to the Buccaneers in Week 2 when he threw for 510 yards with three touchdowns.
Point Projection: 22 points

3. Robert Griffin (Washington Redskins) @ New York Giants

Concussion? What concussion? Washington quarterback Robert Griffin looked just fine last week when he threw for 181 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and ran for 138 yards with two touchdowns. So what to expect this week against a Giants defense that’s given up a lot of fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, but did force three interceptions from San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith last week? The Giants do rank 21st in passing yards allowed per game and 20th in total yards per game, so Griffin will have his opportunities. Plus, the only game in which Griffin scored less than 20 fantasy points was in Week 5 when he suffered that concussion and left the game. Don’t expect points like he scored last week but Griffin should be just fine against the Giants this week.
Point Projection: 21 points

4. Eli Manning (New York Giants) vs. Washington

Most quarterbacks are expected to struggle against a defense as good as the San Francisco 49ers, and last week Eli Manning of the New York Giants proved he was no exception to that rule. Manning threw for just 193 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Now, with an early lead and how well the Giants defense was playing Manning wasn’t needed to throw as much. Expect Manning to return to his usual numbers this week against the Washington Redskins. The Redskins rank last in the league in passing yards allowed per game, and they’re giving up an average of 19.5 fantasy points per to opposing quarterbacks.
Point Projection: 21 points

5. Tom Brady (New England Patriots) vs. New York Jets

There is no doubt that last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks was a disappointing performance for the New England Patriots. Owners of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady were not disappointed when by his 395 yard, two touchdown and two interception performance, though. This week’s game with the New York Jets may pose similar challenges for the Patriots but expect another good performance from Brady. Lifetime against the Jets Brady has averaged 229.5 passing yards per game and has 26 total passing touchdowns with just 10 interceptions. Thus, don’t expect monster numbers but another all around solid performance from Brady against the Jets.
Point Projection: 17 points

6. Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys) @ Carolina

As the losses start to pile up for the Dallas Cowboys so, too, do the questions about head coach Jason Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo. Owner Jerry Jones continues to stand by his guys but how long will that last? Romo threw for 261 yards with two touchdowns and two turnovers in a loss to the Ravens. Romo has just not looked comfortable since he played well in Week 1 against the Giants. This week he faces a Carolina Panthers defense that’s giving up an average of 15.4 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks. Carolina ranks 19th in passing yards allowed per game and 21st in points allowed per game, so this is a slightly optimistic projection for Romo. However, he is around his ceiling here so don’t expect him to get back to his Week 1 form.
Point Projection: 17 points

7. Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers) @ Cincinnati

It’s safe to say that last week’s game against the Tennessee Titans went almost the complete opposite of the way we expected it to for the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s clear that although the Steelers are still a talented team there are some holes in the depth chart. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went for 363 yards with one touchdown and one interception last week, and you should expect similar stats from him against the Cincinnati Bengals this week. Although the Steelers have dominated the Bengals during Roethlisberger’s tenure, his 15 career interceptions against Cincinnati are tied for the most against one team, with the other team being the Baltimore Ravens. Expect good but not great from Roethlisberger this week.
Point Projection: 17 points

8. Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers) vs. Dallas

Not many players needed a bye week last week like Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. In his first five games this season Newton had four passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns with five interceptions and two fumbles. Compare that to the first five games of last season when he had seven passing touchdowns, four rushing touchdowns and six total turnovers. Newton has regressed. The Cowboys are giving up an average of just 12.2 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks, though we like Newton for a bit more than that this week. Maybe it’s the potential for a rushing touchdown, maybe it’s that he’s had two weeks to prepare for this game. Or maybe we’re just being hopeful the reigning rookie of the year can get of his rut.
Point Projection: 17 points

9. Andrew Luck (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Cleveland

Following three consecutive strong performances Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck ran into some trouble in last week’s loss to the Jets. Luck threw for 280 yards with no touchdowns, two interceptions and one fumble. These are growing pains you get with a rookie quarterback. Take a look at look at Luck’s stats and you see his two worst fantasy performances - Week 1 and Week 6 - both came on the road. His other three games, which were at all home, produced an average of 23 fantasy points per game. Luck is at home this week against a Cleveland Browns defense that just got cornerback Joe Haden back last week but is still giving up a lot of fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. Luck is a good play this week.
Point Projection: 17 points

10. Carson Palmer (Oakland Raiders) vs. Jacksonville

Though he may be flying under the radar a bit Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer has continued to turn in solid fantasy performances week in and week out, with Week 4 being the lone exception. In last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Palmer threw for 353 yards with one touchdown, but his two turnovers negated some of the points he got with all those yards. That came against a very good Falcons defense and on the road. This week Palmer gets to face the Jacksonville Jaguars at home, and has an opportunity for his best performance of the season. The Jaguars have given up an average of 21 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks in their last three games, and Jacksonville ranks 24th in the league in passing yards allowed per game.
Point Projection: 17 points

11. Ryan Fitzpatrick (Buffalo Bills) vs. Tennessee

A lot of what has been written here about Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been negative. It’s not been without merit either, he is not that good of a quarterback. However, following two consecutive single-digit fantasy performances we like Fitzpatrick to get back to his gunslinging ways this week against the Tennessee Titans. Though the Titans looked OK last week this is still a team that’s giving up an average of 20 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks, and they rank 29th in the league in passing yards allowed per game and 32nd in points allowed per game. Fitzpatrick shouldn’t have much of a problem reaching double digits this week, but because of propensity for turning the ball over we have kept this projection on the modest side.
Point Projection: 16 points

12. Matt Hasselbeck (Tennessee Titans) @ Buffalo

After last week’s amazing upset over the Steelers, the Tennessee Titans announced that quarterback Jake Locker will sit out this week’s game against the Bills. Matt Hasselbeck gets the start in his place, and he could be in line for a good game. Titans receiver Kenny Britt appears to be fully healthy, finally, and he provides a much needed boost to that offense. In addition to Britt’s return to the lineup the Titans face a Bills defense that’s 31st in the league in total yards allowed per game and points allowed per game. Buffalo did limit Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks Kevin Kolb and John Skelton to a combined six fantasy points last week, but that was an aberration. In the two weeks prior to that the Bills gave up two 30-point fantasy games to opposing quarterbacks.
Point Projection: 16 points

13. Josh Freeman (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. New Orleans

Ah, finally the performance we’ve been waiting for from Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman! In a win over the Kansas City Chiefs last week Freeman threw for 328 yards with three touchdowns and just one interception. Yes, the Chiefs have a poor defense, and yes the lackluster Brady Quinn-lead offense didn’t do them any favors either. Yet, a game like that can do wonders for a quarterback’s confidence and Freeman needed it. We’re not ready to buy into Freeman just yet so the projection is low this week despite the obviously good matchup with the Saints. Even with the matchup Freeman is still a gamble to start given how he’s played overall this season.
Point Projection: 16 points

14. Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) @ Chicago

So the touchdowns have yet to come like we expect from Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, yet he continues to be a consistently good fantasy producer. Stafford only had one passing touchdown last week but his 316 passing yards and his rushing touchdown buoyed his fantasy points as he helped lead the Lions to a comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles. This week may be Stafford’s toughest matchup yet. The Chicago Bears rank third in the league in total yards allowed per game, first in the league in points allowed per game, have forced 13 interceptions and are giving up a league-low seven fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. We’ve got Stafford projected for 15 points simply because we could see a lot of second-half passing from the Lions but be prepared, a lot could go wrong here.
Point Projection: 15 points

15. Jay Cutler (Chicago Bears) vs. Detroit

Here’s hoping the bye week didn’t slow Cutler’s momentum. The Chicago quarterback had two strong performances in Weeks 4 and 5 before the bye week. In those two games he combined for 567 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Cutler has typically played exceptionally well against Detroit with 10 touchdowns and just one interception in seven career games against the Lions. However, we’re going to limit Cutler’s projection this week simply because, well, he’s Jay Cutler. As much as you can see the good in him you can also see the bad. The Bears could lean heavily on their running game and defense in this game, which would also limit his opportunities.
Point Projection: 15 points
