WEEK 7 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
Week 6 was very kind to kickers, and yet another example of why selecting one before the final round of fantasy drafts is pointless. Fourteen different kickers amassed double-digit fantasy points last week, and 20 kickers were 10 points or fewer behind the week’s top scorers. There were some notable performances during the week, both good and bad, which we’ll discuss as we get into our Fantasy Football Week 7 Kicker Rankings.
::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19, 2012::
1. Robbie Gould (Chicago Bears) vs. Detroit
Gould and the Bears were on their bye last week, allowing him to remain one of the now seven kickers that has yet to miss a field goal this year. He is tied for sixth in extra points, and has registered double-digit fantasy points in four of his five contests this season. We like Gould’s match-up with the Lions this week, because Detroit is 24th in the league in scoring defense and has allowed the fifth-most fantasy points per game to kickers.
Point Projection: 16 points
2. Lawrence Tynes (New York Giants) vs. Washington
Tynes hit four of his five field goals in New York’s win over San Francisco last week, and that miss came on a block. He tied for third in fantasy scoring for the week, but leads all kickers in scoring for the season. Tynes leads all kickers in field goals made and attempted, and already this season has three games in which he’s hit four or more field goals. He and the rest of the G-Men face off against a Washington team that gives up a boatload of points, so look for another good day from him.
Point Projection: 15 points
3. Stephen Gostkowski (New England Patriots) vs. New York Jets
Gostkowski made kicks from 25, 35 and 35 yards out in the Patriots loss to the Seahawks on Sunday. His 11 fantasy points continued a streak of not having fewer than seven fantasy points in any game this season. Gostkowski will go well over that number this week against a Jets team that has given up an above-average amount of fantasy points to kickers.
Point Projection: 13 points

4. Dan Bailey (Dallas Cowboys) @ Carolina
For the second time in his last three games, Bailey made three field goals during the Cowboys loss to Baltimore last week. He hit from 34, 42 and 43 yards, but missed a 51-yarder at the end of the fourth quarter that would have given Dallas the win. Still, we like what we’ve seen from him of late, and think he’ll have a big game against a Carolina team that is in the bottom half of the league in scoring defense and has allowed more fantasy points per game to kickers than any other squad.
Point Projection: 12 points
5. David Akers (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Seattle
Akers went 1-for-3 in field goals as the 49ers succumbed to the Giants last week. He made a 42-yard kick, but whiffed on kicks from 43 and 52 yards. He’s struggled mightily from long range this year, making just six of his 11 boots from 40 or more yards, and he’s 29th overall in field goal percentage. Fantasy owners have begun to lose confidence in Akers, but he’s still among the top-10 in field goals and PATs made, so bearing with him through these struggles could pay off later in the season.
Point Projection: 11 points
7. Jason Hanson (Detroit Lions) @ Chicago
Hanson’s four field goals last week in Detroit’s win over the Eagles made him the Week 6 co-leader in fantasy points at his position, but also gave him the outright lead for the season, despite already having a bye. He’s made four field goals in three of his five games this year, and though we don’t see that happening this week in a tough match-up against the Bears, he’s a guy who fantasy owners should continue to start with confidence.
Point Projection: 11 points
7. Blair Walsh (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Arizona
Walsh continued his excellent rookie campaign, making field goals from 20, 27, 27 and 37 yards as Minnesota fell to Washington. He’s not had fewer than eight fantasy points in any game this year, and four times has compiled double-digit points. Walsh is tied for second among kickers in scoring, but has a tough match-up this week against the Cardinals, who haven’t allowed more than seven fantasy points in a game to kickers since Week 2. Still, Walsh is kicking with the best of them right now.
Point Projection: 10 points
8. Garrett Hartley (New Orleans Saints) @ Tampa Bay
The Saints were on their bye last week, and Hartley fell further back among kickers on the fantasy scoring leaderboard. Though he has just one week with double-digit fantasy points this season, we think he’ll get there against the Bucs. Tampa has one of the league’s worst pass defenses, and obviously, that’s what the Saints do best, and that should get Hartley in position to bust a few kicks through the uprights.
Point Projection: 10 points
9. Sebastian Janikowski (Oakland Raiders) vs. Jacksonville
Janikowski has played five games this season, including last week’s loss to Atlanta. Here’s how many field goals he has made in each game: 2, 2, 2, 2, 2. See a trend there? He has yet to miss this season, but isn’t providing fantasy owners with PATs or the number of long-distance kicks which we’ve seen from him in the past, and that has us a bit concerned. He should be able to accumulate a good number of points this week against a Jaguars team that has allowed more fantasy points per game to kickers than all but seven other teams.
Point Projection: 10 points
10. Greg Zuerlein (St. Louis Rams) vs. Green Bay
“The Leg” is human after all. Rookie Zuerlein had made 15 straight field goals to start his career, including kicks from 32 and 48 yards in the first quarter of the Rams loss to the Dolphins, before missing three times over the final three quarters. And while one of his misses was a whiff from 37 yards, he also missed from 52 and 66 yards, the latter of which came at the end of the game. That kick had enough distance, but was wide left. We’ll see how Zuerlein responds, but we’re pretty confident that he’ll right the ship kicking in the comfy environment of a dome this week.
Point Projection: 10 points
11. Phil Dawson (Cleveland Browns) @ Indianapolis
Dawson continued his excellent season last week in Cleveland’s win over Cincinnati. He made field goals from 38 and 41 yards, and has now made two or more field goals in five of his six games this year. Dawson is one of seven kickers who have yet to miss a field goal attempt, and he has amassed double-digit fantasy points in all but one game this year. The Colts shouldn’t stand in his way from adding another double-digit game to his resume.
Point Projection: 9 points
12. Connor Barth (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. New Orleans
If Barth had made his 55-yard field goal during Tampa’s win over Kansas City, instead of hitting the upright, he would have been yet another kicker to obtain double-digit fantasy points for the week. But he missed, and had just a 38-yard field goal and five PATs to show for his day. He’s a quality kicker having a nice season, with three games of 11 or more fantasy points, a mark we think he just misses this week.
Point Projection: 9 points
13. Shayne Graham (Houston Texans) vs. Baltimore
Graham made his only kick last week, a 51-yard boot, as the Texans fell to the Packers. He also made a trio of PATs, and is the league’s co-leader in that category, which fantasy owners should be happy about, because though that’s just a single point, they start to add up. We like him again this week against a Baltimore defense that is a surprising 26th in the league, which caters to what Houston does best – run the ball.
Point Projection: 9 points
