WEEK 6 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
Parity was the name of the game in Week 5 for fantasy kickers, as the top-15 kickers in scoring were within six points of each other. Rookies continued to steal the show, as Minnesota’s Blair Walsh was the week’s top fantasy earner, though St. Louis’ Greg Zuerlein remains atop the scoring list for the season. Let’s see if these rookies can continue booting the ball through the uprights consistently in this week’s rankings.
::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 13, 2012::
1. Matt Bryant (Atlanta Falcons) vs. Oakland
Bryant made his lone field goal last week in Atlanta’s win over Washington, a 53-yarder in the fourth quarter that tied the game. He’s tied for sixth in fantasy scoring this season, and we like him this week against an Oakland team that is allowing more than 30 points per game.
Point Projection: 16 points
2. Blair Walsh (Minnesota Vikings) @ Washington
As we mentioned in the intro, Walsh led all kickers in fantasy scoring last week with 13 points by making field goals from 26, 36 and 43 yards, as well as three extra points in the Vikings win over the Titans. The Georgia product is tied for third in field goals made this season and tied for second in fantasy scoring, and should have plenty of opportunities against a poor Washington defense.
Point Projection: 15 points
3. David Akers (San Francisco 49ers) vs. New York Giants
Akers had just a single field goal – from 19 yards out – last week against Buffalo, but that’s because the 49ers kept scoring touchdowns. He hit all six of his extra points, and he’s now 10th at his position in fantasy scoring. San Francisco is tied for third in the league in scoring, and against a Giants team that is only average in stopping the run, Akers could be in for a very good day.
Point Projection: 15 points

4. Connor Barth (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. Kansas City
Tampa was on a bye last week, but hopefully fantasy owners didn’t forget about how well Barth is doing this season. He’s had 11 or more fantasy points in three of his four games this year and has made each of his nine field goals (including six from 40 or more yards). This week he and the Bucs go up against a Kansas City team that is 27th in the league in scoring defense, and Barth is more than capable of taking advantage of that.
Point Projection: 14 points
5. Greg Zuerlein (St. Louis Rams) @ Miami
Zuerlein had just seven fantasy points last week against Arizona, which was a season-low for him. But he did kick a 53-yard field goal, and is tied for the league lead in field goals made from 50 or more yards, and has more field goals from 40 or more yards than any other kicker. As such, he’s first at his position in fantasy scoring, and should be a fantasy starter in every league.
Point Projection: 13 points
6. Jason Hanson (Detroit Lions) @ Philadelphia
Hanson and the Lions had a bye last week, yet the veteran kicker is still tied for sixth at his position in fantasy scoring. He’s also tied for third in field goals made, and trails only Greg Zuerlein in field goals made from 40 or more yards. The Eagles are tied with the Chiefs for sixth-most fantasy points per game allowed to kickers, and Hanson will take advantage of that this week.
Point Projection: 12 points
7. Alex Henery (Philadelphia Eagles) vs. Detroit
Henery didn’t even attempt a field goal last week in Philly’s loss to Pittsburgh, and he’s in the middle of the pack in fantasy scoring. But we have him in our top-10 because he has an excellent leg, is 8-of-9 in field goals this season, and takes on the Lions this week, who are 26th in the NFL in scoring defense. If the Eagles can stop turning the ball over, Henery’s fantasy stock should improve dramatically.
Point Projection: 11 points
8. Justin Tucker (Baltimore Ravens) vs. Dallas
Tucker’s trio of field goals – from 26, 28 and 39 yards – were enough for Baltimore to take down the Chiefs last week. He’s tied for sixth in field goals made this year, and stands alone at sixth in fantasy scoring. Tucker remains an excellent fantasy option and should remain so the rest of the season, barring injury.
Point Projection: 11 points
9. Sebastian Janikowski (Oakland Raiders) @ Atlanta
Like Hanson, Janikowski was on a bye last week, but unlike Hanson, Janikowski isn’t among the league leaders in fantasy points. He’s gone 2-for-2 in field goals in all four of his games this season, but has not made a PAT in two of those games, and only a pair of his eight field goals have come from 40 or more yards, which is very un-Janikowski like. But he’ll get on track eventually, and we love it when he kicks in a dome, like he will this week in Atlanta.
Point Projection: 11 points
10. Stephen Gostkowski (New England Patriots) @ Seattle
Gostkowski’s 23-yard field goal in the Patriots win over the Broncos was his only three-point try of the game, but he did nail four extra points. He’s missed three field goals this season, each of which came from between 40 and 49 yards, but is tied for fifth in field goals made and is fourth in fantasy scoring. Behind New England’s offense, he’s an every-week fantasy starter.
Point Projection: 11 points

11. Shaun Suisham (Pittsburgh Steelers) @ Tennessee
Suisham’s 34-yard field goal at the end of the fourth quarter won the game for the Steelers last week against the Eagles, and he also made field goals from 20 and 34 yards in the game. Suisham hasn’t attempt a field goal from 50 or more yards this year, and just two from 40 or more yards, but his match-up this week is too good to ignore. No team has allowed more fantasy points to kickers than Tennessee, a team which is also allowing more points per game than any other NFL team.
Point Projection: 10 points
12. Nick Novak (San Diego Chargers) vs. Denver
Novak was 1-for-2 in field goals last week in San Diego’s loss to New Orleans, but his one miss came from 55 yards out. He’ll remain the kicker for the Chargers as long as Nate Kaeding remains out, but nobody seems quite sure how long that’ll be. Novak is a solid kicker who deserves a spot on fantasy rosters, and has a solid match-up this week with Denver’s mediocre defense.
Point Projection: 10 points
13. Phil Dawson (Cleveland Browns) vs. Cincinnati
Dawson made field goals from 32 and 41 yards last week in the Browns loss to the Giants, and also hit three PATs. He’s been in double-digits in fantasy points in all but one game this season, is tied for most kicks made from 40 or more yards, and is tied for eighth in fantasy scoring on the year. We still have some trepidation with him because we don’t much like the Cleveland offense, but you can’t ignore how Dawson has performed this season.
Point Projection: 9 points
14. Shayne Graham (Houston Texans) vs. Green Bay
Graham hit three field goals in the Texans win over the Jets, two from inside 30 yards and one from 42 yards. That, plus a pair of PATs, left him tied for second in fantasy scoring at his position for the week, and propelled him to 11th in scoring for the season. The Packers have been average this season defensively, so they shouldn’t stand in Graham’s way this week all that much.
Point Projection: 9 points
