WEEK 2 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
‘The tight end position represented itself well for fantasy owners during the initial week of the NFL season. Eleven different players at the position registered double-digit point totals, and 14 players managed a touchdown reception. There were plenty of scores from the upper-tier players (see: Gronkowski, Rob and Graham, Jimmy), but there were surprises thrown in as well, like Marcedes Lewis, whose one touchdown grab this week was one more than he had all of last season. What’s in store this week? It’s on to the Week 2 fantasy football tight end rankings to find out.
::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2012::
1. Jimmy Graham (New Orleans Saints) @ Carolina
The Saints may have lost to Washington on Sunday, but it wasn’t Graham’s fault. He helped his team, and fantasy owners, with six receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown, equaling 14 fantasy points (the most of any tight end for the week). He should be in line for another excellent output against Carolina on Sunday. In two games against them last season, Graham totaled 16 catches for 226 yards and one score.
Point Projection: 17 points
2. Rob Gronkowski (New England Patriots) vs. Arizona
Last Sunday, Gronk picked up right where he left off last season, scoring a touchdown and hauling in six of Tom Brady’s passes for 60 yards. We would have liked to have seen him put up a better YPC average than 10.0, but 12 fantasy points is nothing to complain about. Obviously, he’ll continue to be a huge point of emphasis for the Patriots, and bigger days are coming – and they’re coming this week, in fact.
Point Projection: 15 points
3. Jermichael Finley (Green Bay Packers) vs. Chicago
Finley led all tight ends in receptions and targets against the 49ers, with seven and 11, respectively. He also scored a touchdown, but only managed 10 fantasy points because he could only muster 47 receiving yards, which is a pathetic 6.7 YPC. He’ll fly past that number this week against the Bears. He had four touchdowns against Chicago in two games last season, and Chicago just allowed rookie Coby Fleener to gain 82 yards, so we think Finley can do the same, but add a TD.
Point Projection: 12 points

4. Antonio Gates (San Diego Chargers) vs. Tennessee
Gates led all Chargers players with eight targets in their Monday night victory over the Raiders, but his numbers were middling – four catches for 43 yards. We have a feeling bigger things are in store for Gates this week against the Titans. We’ve already seen that Tennessee can get exposed by great tight ends (23 fantasy points allowed last week to the Patriots), and Gates should continue to get more passes thrown his way by Philip Rivers than any other Chargers receiver.
Point Projection: 12 points
5. Vernon Davis (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Detroit
Davis had just three catches in the 49ers win against the Packers, but gained 43 yards and scored a touchdown in the game. We don’t like seeing him get nearly the same number of looks as a wideout that didn’t play at all last season, and think he should be getting more balls thrown his way, but that’s probably wishful thinking. Nonetheless, his athleticism should be too much for the Lions to handle this week, and even if his receptions are limited, all it takes is one big play for Davis to rack up the fantasy points.
Point Projection: 12 points
6. Aaron Hernandez (New England Patriots) vs. Arizona
Hernandez and teammate Rob Gronkowski put up nearly identical numbers last week, with Gronk catching six passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, and Hernandez snaring six passes for 59 yards and a score. The numbers should be somewhat similar for the two most of the season, though with Hernandez trailing in total touchdowns. Either way, they will each continue to be top-10 tight ends throughout the year.
Point Projection: 11 points
7. Fred Davis (Washington Redskins) @ St. Louis
Robert Griffin III threw for 320 yards in Washington’s upset over New Orleans, but only managed to find Davis twice for 38 yards. RG3 only targeted Davis four times, but that shouldn’t be something fantasy owners should be too concerned about, because Griffin didn’t target any of his receivers more than six times. Davis and the ‘Skins square off against the Rams this week, and even though St. Louis limited Davis to only four receptions for 34 yards last season, we think he’ll step up and have a big day against a team with very average linebackers.
Point Projection: 9 points
8. Jason Witten (Dallas Cowboys) @ Seattle
Witten’s spleen injury (two words that nobody wants to see associated with them), cost him time in the preseason, and limited him last week to only two catches for 10 yards. He’s had plenty of time to recover, and should be back to 100 percent this week against the Seahawks. Look for him to make up for his Week 1 mediocrity against the Seahawks, who he had 71 yards and one touchdown against last season.
Point Projection: 9 points
9. Tony Gonzalez (Atlanta Falcons) vs. Denver
As you may expect, Gonzalez was third among targets last week in Atlanta’s win over the Chiefs, with six. He trailed Julio Jones and Roddy White, but still managed five catches, including one for a touchdown, and 53 receiving yards. He’ll face the Broncos this week, and should be in line for similar numbers against a team that let Heath Miller score against them on Sunday night.
Point Projection: 9 points
10. Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit Lions) @ San Francisco
Pettigrew’s 10 targets last Sunday against the Rams were tied for the second-most at the tight end position, and though he only caught five of those balls, he did manage 77 yards, which was the fourth-highest total at the position. Pettigrew has good hands and a huge frame, making him difficult to defend, but we’re confident that the 49ers defense will limit Detroit’s passing attack somewhat. If the Rams can do it (don’t let Matthew Stafford’s 355 passing yards fool you, he was terrible through three quarters), there’s no doubt San Francisco can. However, the Niners will spend their time stopping Megatron, which means Pettigrew will get some room to do damage in the middle of the field.
Point Projection: 8 points

11. Owen Daniels (Houston Texans) @ Jacksonville
The 87 yards Daniels accumulated against Miami was the most at the tight end position this week. He accumulated that total on just four receptions, despite being targeted eight times. He and the Texans take on Jacksonville this week, and he had four receptions in each of his two games against them last year. Look for more production out of him against the Jags this season, starting this week.
Point Projection: 8 points
12. Jared Cook (Tennessee Titans) @ San Diego
Cook led all Titans players with four receptions and 64 yards, though his six targets trailed the total of both Chris Johnson and Nate Washington. If Cook can develop chemistry with Jake Locker, there’s no reason for him not to be in the upper echelon of tight ends. But that’ll take time, and until we can trust in that development, he’s a mid-tier guy.
Point Projection: 8 points
13. Coby Fleener (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Minnesota
Fleener had a good debut for the Colts, and was second on the team in targets (10), catches (six), and receiving yards (82). In fact, only two other tight ends had more receiving yards than Fleener in Week 1, and we think he’s a borderline starter against a Minnesota squad that allowed Marcedes Lewis to rack up 10 fantasy points.
Point Projection: 7 points
14. Jermaine Gresham (Cincinnati Bengals) vs. Cleveland
Gresham had enough targets on Monday night against the Ravens to do some damage – eight – but he failed to get anything going, and wound up with a paltry three catches for 30 yards. Still, we like his matchup with Cleveland a lot, because in two games against them last season he totaled 11 catches for 126 yards and two scores. Gresham had four double-digit fantasy point games last season, and two of those came against the Browns. At the very least, he’s worth considering as a starter for your fantasy team this week.
Point Projection: 7 points
15. Greg Olsen (Carolina Panthers) vs. New Orleans
Carolina only managed 10 points against the Bucs in their Week 1 loss, despite solid passing numbers. Olsen had a decent day, with 56 yards on six receptions (seven targets), and remains worthy of being on fantasy rosters. The Panthers play the Saints this week, and even though Olsen scored a touchdown against them last season, he also had just three catches for 21 yards, so we’re not too excited about his prospects this week.
Point Projection:7 points
