WEEK 2 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
Who would’ve thought that at the conclusion of Week 1, a kicker who was released at the end of the preseason would be tied for the lead in fantasy football points, while a kicker who was projected to be among the best would be tied for the fewest points? That’s exactly what happened this week, as Washington’s Billy Cundiff, recently of the Ravens, found himself with 18 points while Green Bay’s Mason Crosby managed just two. Let’s see if Cundiff will continue to put up big numbers and if Crosby can bounce back in our Week 2 fantasy football kicker rankings.

1. Garrett Hartley (New Orleans Saints) @ Carolina
Hartley collected only six fantasy points during the Saints’ Week 1 loss to Washington, making a 21-yard field goal and a trio of PATs. Still, we see much bigger things in store for him this week against the Panthers. Last season, New Orleans scored a total of 75 points in two games against their NFC South division foes, and Hartley should be a part of a similar scoring burst this week.
Point Projection: 16 points
2. Stephen Gostkowski (New England Patriots) vs. Arizona
Gostkowski managed a solid fantasy point total of 10 last week in New England’s win over the Titans. He made each of his field goal attempts, though the longest was from just 31 yards, ebbing his scoring a bit. But he also made four extra points, and should continue in that vein this week against the Cardinals.
Point Projection: 15 points
3. Sebastian Janikowski (Oakland Raiders) @ Miami
Janikowski didn’t even attempt an extra point in Oakland’s Monday night loss to the Chargers, but still wound up with eight fantasy points. He did so by hitting a pair of field goals, from 19 and 51 yards, and those kicks from long distances are what make him such a valuable fantasy entity. He’s a threat to make one from 50+ every week.
Point Projection: 15 points
4. David Akers (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Detroit
Akers was tied for fifth in fantasy points among kickers this week, due in part to his record-tying 63-yard bomb at the end of the first half in San Francisco’s win over the Packers. Last year’s top fantasy kicker also had field goals of 40 and 43 yards, along with three PATs. Akers and the Niners take on the Lions this week, a team which he had 13 fantasy points against last season.
Point Projection: 14 points
5. Nate Kaeding (San Diego Chargers) vs. Tennessee
Kaeding tied with the aforementioned Billy Cundiff for the lead in fantasy points at the kicker position this week with 18. He made just a single extra point, but his five field goals were the most in the NFL, and two of those kicks came from beyond 40 yards. Fantasy owners can rest assured that he’s back among the top-tier kickers after last season’s injury.
Point Projection: 14 points
6. Dan Bailey (Dallas Cowboys) @ Seattle
Bailey had a ho-hum evening for the ‘Boys last week, opening the season with three extra points and only one field goal attempt, a 33-yarder which he nailed. That type of average game should be rare for Bailey, and there’s every reason to believe he’ll more than double his output from Week 1 against the Seahawks. He and the Cowboys took them on last season, and in that game Bailey compiled 12 fantasy points.
Point Projection: 13 points
7. Mike Nugent (Cincinnati Bengals) vs. Cleveland
Nugent didn’t have a lot to do against the Ravens last week, with a pair of field goals and only one extra point, putting him squarely in the middle of the pack among fantasy kickers for the week. He should vault up the board this week against Cleveland, against whom he had double-digit fantasy point totals in each of his two games versus them during the 2011 campaign.
Point Projection: 13 points
8. Mason Crosby (Green Bay Packers) vs. Chicago
We mentioned Crosby’s paucity of points in the intro, but we aren’t too concerned. While it’s true he didn’t attempt a field goal against the Niners, the same situation occurred in Week 1 of last season, and he still managed to be a valuable fantasy asset the rest of the way. We like him to hit a few field goals this week against Chicago, even though he compiled a total of only 14 fantasy points in a pair of games against the Bears last season.
Point Projection: 12 points
9. Matt Bryant (Atlanta Falcons) vs. Denver
Bryant tied for third in fantasy scoring during Week 1 by hitting four field goals as well as four extra points. With an offense as potentially explosive as Atlanta’s, Bryant should continue to be among the weekly leaders, and we project him to have another solid day this week.
Point Projection: 12 points
10. Shayne Graham (Houston Texans) @ Jacksonville
Though Graham did miss a field goal in Houston’s win over the Dolphins, it came from beyond 50 yards, and he made his other three boots and three extra points, so there isn’t a whole lot to complain about. Those kicks earned him 12 fantasy points, and we like him to put up just a bit less this week in Jacksonville.
Point Projection: 11 points

11. Robbie Gould (Chicago Bears) @ Green Bay
Gould had 11 fantasy points last week against the Colts, with five of those coming on extra points. He also made two field goals, with the longest being from 35 yards. Though he amassed just 11 fantasy points in two games against the Packers last year, we like his chances this week against a struggling Green Bay defense.
Point Projection: 10 points
12. Greg Zuerlein (St. Louis Rams) vs. Washington
Zuerlein, a rookie sixth-round pick, continues to impress, having made each of his three field goals in Detroit, from 29, 46, and 48 yards, as well as two extra points. Those kicks gave him 13 fantasy points for the day, which was good enough for seventh among kickers. His huge leg will serve fantasy owners well for the remainder of the season.
Point Projection: 11 points
12. Matt Prater (Denver Broncos) @ Atlanta
Denver scored 31 points against the Steelers last week, so that meant a pretty good day for Prater, right? Unfortunately for his fantasy owners, no. He had only one field goal and two extra points, because the Broncos attempted a two-point conversion after both of their fourth-quarter touchdowns (failing each time). So the Peyton Manning boon that Prater is expected to see hasn’t quite paid off yet, but we’re confident it will, starting with a solid game this week.
Point Projection: 10 points
14. Justin Tucker (Baltimore Ravens) @ Philadelphia
Tucker was one of the three rookie kickers that finished among the top seven if fantasy points this week. His 16 points were tied for fifth, and he accumulated the total by making five PATs and field goals from 39, 40, and 46 yards. We don’t expect that he’ll be booting a quintet of extra points this week against the Eagles, but he’s clearly a fantasy option with Baltimore’s new fast-paced offense.
Point Projection: 10 points
15. Billy Cundiff (Washington Redskins) @ St. Louis
Cundiff was the league’s co-leader in fantasy points among kickers last week, and we’d be lying if we said we weren’t surprised. But he earned it by making all eight of his kicks, four of which were extra points, and the other four field goals (from 37, 37, 41 and 45 yards). We don’t anticipate him replicating that feat this week, but the Rams should allow Cundiff a number of solid opportunities.
Point Projection: 9 points
16. Connor Barth (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @ New York Giants
Barth continued to be accurate for his fantasy owners, hitting each of his three field goal attempts during Tampa’s win over the Panthers on Sunday. He also connected on his only PAT, for a total of 11 fantasy points. His accuracy is a reliable trait that should have his fantasy owners feeling good about having him on their squad as a middle-of-the-road kicker.
Point Projection: 9 points
