QUARTERBACKS—-CUT THEM LOOSE

Colt McCoy (Cleveland Browns)

Earlier in the season we praised the Cleveland Browns and quarterback Colt McCoy for becoming a pass team despite not possessing the weapons to do so. McCoy was never spectacular but consistently scored between 13-17 fantasy points each week for the team’s first five games of the season. Just as things were looking up for the young quarterback, reality set it. On a team with a poor running game and receivers who’d probably be backups on other teams, the Browns have struggled offensively in the midseason. McCoy has averaged just 10.3 fantasy points per game over the last four weeks, and that includes a pair of seven-point performances. The worst part is that for McCoy to rebound he’s going to have to do it against some of the league’s toughest defenses. He still has one game against the Cincinnati Bengals and two each against the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Consider Dropping In: 10-Team, 12-Team and 14-Team Leagues

Tarvaris Jackson (Seattle Seahawks)

So perhaps we waited a little too long to include Seattle Seahawks receiver Tarvaris Jackson on this list. Maybe we got gun-shy after he tossed three touchdowns against the Falcons in Week 4 or when he threw for 333 yards against the Bengals in Week 8. Maybe we were just being too nice. Whatever the reason, Jackson is now officially on the list. In his last three games Jackson’s thrown four interceptions and no touchdowns. On the season he’s got three more interceptions than touchdowns and his coach, Pete Carroll, trusts him so much that Charlie Whitehurst has received some playing time. At this point it’s safe to say that Jackson just isn’t a starting quarterback in the NFL. We’ve seen glimpses of his potential here and there, sure, but those glimpses have been too few and far between. Jackson just doesn’t cut it, no matter what format your league uses.

Consider Dropping In: 10-Team, 12-Team and 14-Team Leagues
