Just because the 2010 NFL season recently came to an end doesn’t mean that you can’t start preparing for the upcoming fantasy football season. Comprised of 11 members of the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Staff and guest draftee Jim Day from Fantasy Football Whiz we bring to you the first of many Fantasy Football 2011 Mock Drafts. This draft will be a 16-round affair based on a standard scoring league (Pass TDs - 4 points, All Other TDs - 6 points, 25 Yards Passing - 1 point, 10 Yards Rushing/Receiving - 1 point). Outside of having to field a starting lineup made up of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D/ST, owners are free to fill out their rosters any way they like.
Commentary after each pick is provided by the Bruno Boys staff member who made that pick. The draft started on February 10, 2011. Be sure to check back on a regular basis for updates and feel free to give your opinion in our comments section.
2011 FANTASY FOOTBALL MOCK DRAFT ROUND 14 RESULTS
14.01: Bruno Boys Allie - Carson Palmer, QB, Cincinnati Bengals — Time to pick up a backup for Aaron Rodgers and there aren’t too many appealing options this late in the draft. As long as Rodgers stays healthy, I’d only use my QB2 on a bye week therefore I’ve decided to roll with the soon-to-be former Cincinnati Bengal Carson Palmer. Despite the Bengals 4-12 record and a career-high 20 interceptions in 2010, Palmer threw for 3,970 yards and 26 touchdowns and finished as No. 12 among fantasy football quarterbacks. Though Palmer wants out of Cincinnati so badly that he put his house on the market and threatened to retire if they don’t trade him, I’ll take my chances at this point that he lands a starting gig elsewhere in the league.
14.02: Bruno Boys Kyle - Steve Breaston, WR, Arizona Cardinals — In his first year without Anquan Boldin standing in his way, Breaston didn’t deliver the numbers some people were expecting, but a lot of that had to do with the utterly hideous display of quarterbacking in the desert. Breaston also missed time with injury, and he should easily post better numbers in 2011 with even competent quarterback play.
14.03: Bruno Boys Lane - Atlanta Falcons D/ST — I suppose it’s time to take a defense. An argument could be made that the Minnesota Vikings or the New York Giants would have been better selections, however when I rank defenses, there’s only one stat that matters: scoring, real and fantasy. Atlanta was No.5 in real points allowed and No. 6 in fantasy points scored, which makes them the winner.
14.04: Bruno Boys Ryan - Mark Clayton, WR, St. Louis Rams — Clayton had 300 yards receiving and two touchdowns through the first four games of the season and looked like a breakout campaign was certain in 2010. However, he suffered a devastating knee injury in Week 5 against the Detroit Lions and missed the rest of the season. Clayton expects to be fully recovered in time for the 2011 season and the St. Louis Rams are looking to resign him. If Clayton resigns with the Rams, I think it’s possible for him to rekindle the chemistry he had with Sam Bradford in 2010 and be the Rams No. 1 receiver. If Bradford continues to progress Clayton might end up being the one who reaps most of the benefits.
14.05: Bruno Boys Rich - New York Giants D/ST — Before I get stuck with a waste of space for my defense, I figured I would take a shot at the New York Giants. They were in the top-10 in fantasy scoring last year and if they can be a little more consistent they have a chance at jumping back into the top five.
14.06: Bruno Boys James - Reggie Bush, RB, New Orleans Saints — Bush never fully materialized into the running back we thought he’d be and the Saints might not want him back next year, however at 26 I think there is a place in the league for him. Being that it is Round 14 and I have the majority of my team in place, I feel that drafting Bush this late could prove to be real value down the road. Only time will tell.
14.07: FF Whiz - Jim Day - Andre Roberts, WR, Arizona Cardinals — Roberts was bogged down on the depth chart last year, however with Early Doucet proving that he will never take the next step and Steve Breaston being a free-agent, look for the Citadel alum to get his chance in 2011. He is an excellent route runner with good hands and should have a shot of taking over the No. 2 role in Arizona.
14.08: Bruno Boys Cory - Tony Moeaki, TE, Kansas City Chiefs — With time running out in the draft I wanted to pick up a sleeper, so I selected Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Moeaki. As a rookie last season Moeaki caught 47 passes for 556 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games. He’s athletic and has shown the ability to get it done in the red zone, and I think his numbers could improve a lot in 2011. That is, as long as Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe doesn’t hoard all the touchdown receptions to himself.
14.09: Bruno Boys Cavigs - Mike Goodson, RB, Carolina Panthers — After drafting a second tight end in Round 13, I had to decide if I should draft a backup quarterback or add more running back depth. Feeling confident that Matt Schaub can get it done on a weekly basis, I opted to go with Goodson. Since Carolina didn’t franchise tag DeAngelo Williams there is a strong possibility that Williams has played his last game in Carolina. That said, it opens up the door for Goodson to be the change of pace running back behind Jonathan Stewart. In Round 14, this pick is low risk, but has some potential reward.
14.10: Bruno Boys JRonstadt - Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Rookie/Free Agent — Normally not a proponent of selecting rookie wideouts, I decided to roll the dice on former Pittsburgh star Jonathan Baldwin. Baldwin is a 6’ 4” 228 pound monster who has a 42-inch vertical leap and a forty time of 4.45 seconds. At the very least, Baldwin’s superior athleticism should make him a dangerous red zone weapon during his rookie year, regardless of where he ends up.
14.11: Bruno Boys Brad - Rashad Jennings, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars — I’ll draft my handcuff to Maurice Jones-Drew here. Jennings was productive when given the chance in 2010 (see 22-carry, 108-yard effort against the Houston Texans in Week 17), so I feel good he can be productive if Jones-Drew were to go down in 2011.
14.12: Bruno Boys Jimbo - Nate Kaeding, K, San Diego Chargers — If I don’t take a kicker with one of these next two picks, everybody else will get their kicker before me, so it’s wise to snag one now. Despite enduring an injury last season, Nate Kaeding is still one of the top kickers in the league. With the high-octane San Diego Chargers’ offense returning in 2011, there’s no reason to think Kaeding won’t have plenty more opportunities to kick ‘em through the posts.
