Jay Cutler, QB, Chicago Bears
2010 Stats: 3,274 passing yards, 60.4 completion percentage, 24 total touchdowns, 16 interceptions

It was a rough season for Cutler, which ended with the miserable image of him staring off into space as the Bears were defeated in the NFC Championship game by the eventual Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. The high-flying Mike Martz offense is supposed to be a huge boost for quarterbacks, but things never really got off the ground due to an extremely poor offensive line that allowed a league high 56 sacks. From a four sack performance in Week 1 to the NFC title game the Bears couldn’t protect their quarterback on five and seven-step drops that are a major part of the Martz offense. Cutler was sacked a gut-wrenching 27 times in his first six games before the bye week and actually missed a game due to a concussion because of it. This led to Martz having to go to a more balanced attack, which helped Cutler (133 less pass attempts in 2010) lower his interception total from 26 in 2009 to 16 last year, however it also lowered his touchdown total to 23.

The Bears drafted Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi in Round 1 this year, but his pass-blocking skills are still raw and will take time to develop. If Chicago doesn’t find a way to shore up their line, you can expect the offensive scheme to hinder Cutler’s ability to air it out and limit his fantasy football production. He will have some solid games and could be used as a matchup play, however it would be hard to justify investing in Cutler as your QB1 in 12-team formats.
