::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF SEPTEMBER 4, 2010::

TIER 1

1. Andre Johnson - Houston Texans (Bye: 7)

Take the “a” out of the word “beast” and you get “best.” Andre Johnson qualifies as both. His physical ability is nonpareil among wideouts in the NFL, and his numbers bear that out. He was the NFL leader in receiving yards last season with 1,569, was third in the league with 101 receptions, and tenth with nine touchdowns. He was also the league leader in targets with 170, and was one of just four players with at least 20 catches of 20 or more yards, all of which underlies his importance to Houston and their top-ranked passing game.

Johnson has now gone two consecutive seasons with at least 100 catches, 1,500 yards and eight touchdowns, and at age 29, is in the midst of his prime. He should be the top-ranked receiver on all draft boards, and likely a late first-round pick in fantasy drafts.

2. Randy Moss - New England Patriots (Bye: 5)

For one reason or another, 2009 felt a bit like a down year for Moss. A lot of that may be because he had just one touchdown through Week 5, and three times in the first five weeks he was held to 50 or fewer receiving yards. Needless to say, however, he rebounded, snaring 83 passes for 1,264 yards (fifth in the NFL) and tying for the league-lead with 13 touchdown grabs.

All of these numbers were improvements over his 2008 totals, and represent a good barometer for what we can expect of Moss in 2010. Even at age 33, he’s shown no real signs of slowing down, and with Wes Welker likely able to come back early in the season (even if not at full health), Moss shouldn’t see extended double and triple coverage – and even if he does, he’ll leap right over his defenders, as usual.

TIER 2

3. Reggie Wayne - Indianapolis Colts (Bye: 7)

Wayne was tied for fifth in the NFL in catches and receiving yards, with 100 and 1,264, respectively. He also nabbed 10 touchdowns, and was seventh in the league with 149 targets. Wayne did most of his damage in a dizzying first half of production in which he had double-digit fantasy points in seven of his first nine games. In the subsequent seven regular-season games, however, he amassed double-digit fantasy points just twice.

Whether that was a product of pure coincidence or age slowly creeping up on the receiver (who will be 32 in November) is a matter of conjecture. We certainly don’t believe Wayne’s best years are behind him, but to expect him to put up the same type of numbers this season that he did last is a bit of folly, if only because the Colts should have even more options on offense. Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon are more established, Dallas Clark is a top tight end, Anthony Gonzalez should be healthy and effective, and Joseph Addai and (a healthy) Donald Brown should team up to be a productive backfield. So still expect a lot of Wayne, just not quite as much as you had.

4. Calvin Johnson - Detroit Lions (Bye: 7)

The man called Megatron traipsed through a variety of injuries and the torpidness of Detroit’s offense in 2009 to slog to pedestrian digits. He accumulated 67 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns while working with rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford. Decent numbers, to be sure, but not the type of statistical output one would attach to a player with the aforementioned nickname.

There’s plenty of reason for optimism surrounding Johnson, however. Not only are his physical abilities off the charts, but the Lions have many more offensive weapons this season, from dynamic running back Jahvid Best, to Tony Scheffler (and eventually Brandon Pettigrew) at tight end, to a new wideout in Nate Burleson. This should lead opposing defenses away from simply keying on Johnson, freeing him up to post numbers similar to those we saw in 2008, if not better.

5. Roddy White - Atlanta Falcons (Bye: 8)

If you’ll remember, White was the subject of some consternation by fantasy owners last offseason, as it was thought that the addition of future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta’s offense would put a dent in White’s looks around the end zone. Well, that didn’t happen, and he grabbed a career-high 11 touchdowns to go with 85 catches and 1,153 receiving yards.

Only Andre Johnson had more targets in 2009 than White’s 165, and with another year of work with quarterback Matt Ryan, White should post numbers that mirror what he’s done in each of the past three seasons: 80+ receptions, 1,100+ yards and possibly double-digit trips to the end zone.
