::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF SEPTEMBER 4, 2010::

TIER 1

1. Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay Packers (Bye: 10)

What’s not to love about Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers? In 2008, his first year as a starter, he threw for 4,038 yards with 28 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, notched a 63.6% completion percentage, and averaged 7.5 yards per attempt. Those are good numbers, but last season, he trended upwards in all those categories, throwing for 4,434 yards with 30 touchdowns, seven
interceptions, a 64.7% completion percentage, and an average yards per attempt of 8.2, despite playing behind a porous offensive line and with little semblance of a running game early on in the season. That’s what makes the 2010 outlook for Rodgers so bright.

Not only were both the play of the O-line and the ground game on the rise, the Packers also spent their first round pick on Iowa tackle Bryan Bulaga, a guy who easily could have gone in the top-10. Though he is currently listed behind tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher on the depth chart, expect that to change at some point this year. At wide receiver, Rodgers has some great options. Both Greg Jennings and Donald Driver had 1,000-yard seasons last year. James Jones and Jordy Nelson are young guys emerging as potential playmakers, and tight end Jermichael Finley is one of the best young players in the league at his position. Combine that all together, and you could be looking at a 40-touchdown season.

2. Drew Brees - New Orleans Saints (Bye: 10)

New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees had a phenomenal season last year. He threw for 4,388 yards with 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions (down from 17 in 2008), and had career highs in completion percentage (70.6%), average yards per attempt (8.5) and quarterback rating (109.6). Oh yeah, there was also that whole winning the Super Bowl thing that Brees and the Saints did.

Brees and the Saints are well-equipped for another Super Bowl run this season. Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Lance Moore and Robert Meachem all return at wide receiver. Both Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are back at running back, and tight end Jeremy Shockey returns as well. In fact, the only major move on offense was the trade of tackle Jamaal Brown to the Washington Redskins.

New Orleans is flexible enough that it should be able to adjust well without Brown. In fact, the hardest thing New Orleans faces this season is playing after winning a Super Bowl. Are the players
going to play with the same fire and work as hard as they did last year? Can they recapture last season’s magic and make it happen again? How will they handle having that target on their back?
Well, regardless of how well the Saints do, success for Brees is practically guaranteed. The guy is automatic and still getting better every year. A repeat of last season’s numbers looks like a
safe bet.

3. Peyton Manning - Indianapolis Colts (Bye: 7)

New head coach, offensive coordinator and a season-ending injury to the team’s second receiver? No problem for Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning. Manning posted one of his best seasons in 2009, throwing for 4,500 yards with 33 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, a 68.8% completion percentage and an average yards per attempt of 7.9. This came despite losing No. 2 receiver Anthony Gonzalez to a season-ending injury in the first game of the season, leading Manning to having to break in two rookies at receiver and one at running back.

There’s little reason to doubt Manning posts another great set of numbers in 2010. Just look at his stats from year to year, and you see how consistent and good he has been over his career. Over the last seven seasons, Manning has averaged 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. That’s a great fantasy quarterback right there. But in addition to that, he is actually trending upwards in some statistical categories, such as completion percentage, yards per game and average yards per attempt. Combine that with a fantastic group of receivers that includes receivers Reggie Wayne, Gonzalez, Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, tight end Dallas Clark and running backs Joseph Addai and Donald Brown, and this is a guy you want on your team.
