Consisting of 10 members of the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Staff, along with guest columnist’s from Fighting Chance Fantasy and The IDP Guru, our first of many Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft was a 16-round affair based on a standard scoring league (Pass TDs - 4 points, All Other TDs - 6 points, 25 Yards Passing - 1 point, 10 Yards Rushing/Receiving - 1 point). Outside of having to field a starting line-up occupied by 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D, owners were free to compile their rosters any way in which they pleased.
All commentary after each pick is provided by the Bruno Boys staff member who made that pick. The draft started on February 15, 2010 and we will report round-by-round updates as they are available. Make sure to check back for more commentary on our Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft.
FEBRUARY MOCK DRAFT ROUND 13 RESULTS
13.01: Bruno Boys Matt - Brandon Pettigrew (Det) — I reached for Greg Olsen, but I like the high ceiling TEs. This is a pure high upside/value play. Pettigrew, like Matthew Stafford, showed enough in his rookie year to make me optimistic about his future. I’m very happy to have him as my backup tight end.
13.02: Bruno Boys Larry - Minnesota Vikings D/ST (Min) — When the defenses starting falling off the board starting in the eighth round, I decided to stock up on skill players and wait until later in the draft to get my defensive unit. I was thrilled to see one of my favorite defenses on the board here in the 13th round. The Vikings were a top-ten D/ST unit in 2009, and they could be even better this upcoming season. This is proof that you can wait until later in the draft to select a D/ST and still come away with a very good unit.
13.03: Bruno Boys Whooley - Chris Chambers (KC) —- With each passing year, it seems that Chambers’ 2005 season in which he racked up over 1,000 yards receiving and 11 TDs for the Miami Dolphins is the aberration. Nevertheless, I’m willing to gamble on him here in Round 13 due to the life he showed in 2009 after a mid-season trade to the Kansas City Chiefs. Suiting up nine times for KC, Chambers tallied 608 receiving yards and 4 scores. Stretch those numbers out for a full 16 game season, and Chambers would have 1,080 yards and 7 scores. Not bad for a 13th round pick.
13.04: Bruno Boys Hallam - Dustin Keller (NYJ) — Dustin Keller has to be considered a fantasy disappointment through two seasons of his NFL career, but he has shown flashes of what he is capable of. He is a great pass receiver for a tight end, and at 6’2” and 250 pounds he is a load to take down once he has the ball. He did one thing that always gets my attention and that is finish the season strong. Keller had a touchdown in all three playoff games that the Jets played in, and I like his chances for 2010. The Jets offense and Marc Sanchez should improve this coming year, and as my backup tight end, I like the chances of Keller to get at least six touchdowns.
13.05: Bruno Boys Jacob - Tim Hightower (Ari) — Amazing value in round 13. The Cardinals could definitely run the ball 30 times a game without two big cogs in Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin. While Beanie will most likely be the starter, Hightower will still see 10-15 touches on any given Sunday.
13.06: Bruno Boys Jimbo - Julius Jones (Sea) — It’s slim pickings left now at the running back position. I’m taking Julius Jones as my RB4 because I don’t think Justin Forsett will completely take over as the Seahawks’ top running back in 2010. What you will see is a pretty even timeshare with Jones at least starting out as the primary back. If Jones gets off to a strong start and holds off Forsett like Joseph Addai did to Donald Brown last year, then I think I get my money’s worth for my RB4. But if Jones stumbles out of the gate and Forsett quickly becomes the guy in Seattle, well, we’re only talking about my RB4.
13.07: Bruno Boys Allie - Malcolm Floyd (SD) — I was surprised to find the Chargers No. 2 wide receiver still on the board in Round 13. Floyd had his best season in 2009, catching 45 balls for 776 yards and one touchdown. The Chargers used a first and third-round tender on Floyd, a restricted free agent, which suggests he’ll be involved in the offense in 2010. I think Floyd is worth a late round draft pick as a reserve fantasy WR that I can use for match-ups or bye weeks.
Pick 13.08: Bruno Boys Cory - Glen Coffee (SF) — San Francisco 49ers’ running back Glen Coffee is one Frank Gore injury away from being a full-time starter, and Gore is not exactly a model of health. Coffee displayed good flashes in his limited playing time last year and should continue to expand upon his role this season. A power guy who operates best between the tackles, Coffee won’t rack up the yards but does have good touchdown potential. Even if Gore does stay healthy, I imagine Coffee will receive about 125-150 touches, and if I get five touchdowns out of that I’d be happy.
13.09: Bruno Boys Kyle - Chris Cooley (Was) — I needed a good tight end as a back-up to starter Dallas Clark, and Cooley, despite his injury to end the season, and the emergence of Fred Davis, qualifies as a very solid No. 2.
13.10: Bruno Boys IDP Guru - Chester Taylor (Chi) — Taylor’s signing with the Chicago Bears has a definite positive impact on his fantasy value. I believe that Taylor will see a sizable portion of carries and catch quite a few balls out of the backfield in Mike Martz’s offensive system. ::pick made after Taylor signed a contract with the Chicago Bears::
13.11: Bruno Boys Greg - John Carlson (Sea) — Carlson had a very good rookie season and although he didn’t follow it up with a great sophomore year, he is still a very good pass catcher. With Pete Carroll as his coach, the tight end may again become an important cog in the passing game. Add that Nate Burleson just signed with the Detroit Lions, and Seattle will need Carlson to be a bigger part of the offense. I’d say he has some upside as a backup tight end this late in the draft.
13.12: Bruno Boys Cavigs - Julian Edelman (NE) — A converted quarterback, Edelman excelled when Wes Welker was injured in 2009. In the four games that Welker either sat out or left due to injury, Edelman compiled 27 receptions for 265 receiving yards and two touchdowns. With Welker suffering an ACL injury in Week 17 of 2009 and expected to miss the Patriots’ first month, Edelman will slide into the slot and should be a favorite target of quarterback Tom Brady. I drafted Edelman as my sixth wide receiver; however, if Welker is to miss a large amount of time he could produce as a WR3.
Round 13 Commentary from Bruno Boys Whooley: Looking for a sure thing in the thirteenth round? Well, then, you better hope for one of two things - either you’re in a four-team league or your buddies are thinking of the other “football,” you know the one played with your feet, while drafting. Otherwise, it’s not going to happen. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t potential value to be had, and the Bruno Boys’ February Draft demonstrates just that.
Need a RB late, then why not go with the likes of Tim Hightower and Julius Jones as Bruno Boys Jacob and Bruno Boys Jimbo did in the middle of the round? Sure, both running backs are expected to lose a big portion of their workload to younger teammates, but nothing is set in stone. At the very least, these two should be in the mix in their respective backfields, getting at 5 to 8 touches, if not more, on a weekly basis. Best case scenario, they impress in pre-season and reclaim the starting spot.
If Hightower and Jones aren’t your cup of tea, then you can always go the route Bruno Boys Cory and the Bruno Boys IDP Guru went and nab a very capable back-up RB like Glen Coffee or Chester Taylor. Both of these backs are just an injury away from solid fantasy production.
Perhaps, though, you want to take a gamble on a late-round wide receiver. Heck, I got no issue with that. In fact, that’s exactly what I did grabbing Chris Chambers. Yes, I know Chambers is the consummate disappointment in the world of fantasy football, but really how disappointed will I be if my WR5 doesn’t perform. On the plus side, if he continues to do well in KC, I just scored big time.
And, I’m not the only who found WR depth here in Round 13. Bruno Boys Allie, who nabbed up-and-comer Malcolm Floyd from San Diego, and Bruno Boys Cavigs, who selected Wes Welker clone, Julian Edelman, also found guys that could pay big dividends off their bench.
So, yes it may be slim pickings in the 13th round, but the cupboards not bare yet. Remember to do your research, and who knows perhaps Round 13 could be your lucky round in 2010.
