Do you remember last season when premier tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham needled their way into the first and second rounds of countless fantasy football drafts? In addition to several quarterbacks going early, there were a variety of draft scenarios that few were prepared for as running backs and receivers dropped. Those late to the tight end party found themselves overreaching or stretching to find one that could to “fill a need,” especially in PPR leagues. Compound this with taking a quarterback early, many owners were left weak in at least one skill position and with a low quality of depth at another. Quarterbacks are x-factors; get the right one and ride them to your Super Bowl. Riding a tight end into the Super Bowl, on the other hand, is a different story. Gronkowski and Graham were non-factors for a greater part of the second half, despite whatever they did through Week 9. In fact, all they did was give their owners the false hope that they would be the difference maker. The truth is one can’t expect a great season out of tight ends and when one does, the fantasy football gods intervene. To make that same mistake this season could be fantasy suicide because suddenly, the tight end position doesn’t look so glamorous.

The hype has reached a crescendo, and it’s about time for the final game of the NFL season. Unfortunately, this also means that fantasy football season has reached its conclusion, but we’re nothing if not thorough here at Bruno Boys, so for the final time this season, here are the tight end rankings.

The championship round of the NFL playoffs has arrived, and fantasy football season is nearing the end. We saw some very good performances out of the tight end position last week, though we expect a mixed bag in the conference championship games, especially with the absence of Rob Gronkowski. Let’s take a look at how the tight ends will perform this week.

The Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs featured some surprisingly good performances by tight ends, including the reappearance of Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels. This weekend, things should ratchet up a notch as two of the top three fantasy football scorers at the position begin their postseason runs. Let’s take a look at how things will play out this week.

The NFL’s regular season has reached it’s denouement, and so has the fantasy football season. Unless, of course, you are one of those fantasy owners who can’t get enough and simply must have more. If so, you’re in luck, because we’ll continue to rank the players for you all postseason. And even though the tight end position was so blasé in 2012, we take our fantasy football ranking responsibilities seriously, and thus bring you our most educated estimates on what will transpire during the first week of the playoffs.

WEEK 17 RANKINGS: QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
Let’s be perfectly honest here: 2012 has been a supremely lousy season for fantasy football tight ends. Just four players at the position are averaging at least seven fantasy points per game, which means the position’s impact on fantasy squads this season has been minimal, at best. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of young players who are ready to take a step and become impactful for fantasy football owners either, so this drought may last a few years. But one week of the 2012 season does remain, so we’ll do our best to sift through the muck that is the tight end position for Week 17.

WEEK 16 RANKINGS: QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
Some light was finally shed on the tight end position during Week 15 after a mostly dark season. Seven players at the position had double-digit fantasy football points, and 12 tight ends amassed at least eight points. And while there were a few players among the top scorers who were unlikely to be on fantasy football rosters, there were plenty of tight ends – Aaron Hernandez, Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez – who were certain to be starters. Let’s take a look ahead to Week 16 now and see if the stars will continue to shine for the tight end position.

WEEK 15 RANKINGS: QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
We suppose ugly is a relative term, but when it comes to the tight end play from Week 14, there really is no debate – it was unsightly, and that’s probably being kind. The position’s collective performances weren’t as gruesome as that of the Arizona Cardinals, but let’s just say fantasy points were at a premium. There were only five tight ends that amassed double-digit points, just one with at least 75 receiving yards and only five that broke 60 yards. And the top players at the position were almost nowhere to be found, with the leading receiver among tight ends being Anthony McCoy (105 yards), who has more games with zero fantasy football points this season than games with at least one. All fantasy owners can really do now is look ahead, so that’s what we’ll do with our fantasy football Week 15 tight end rankings.

WEEK 14 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
There’s really only one apt word to describe the tight end position in Week 13 – busy. Eleven tight ends received at least eight targets and eleven players had five or more receptions, which led to some solid fantasy football point totals. There were nine tight ends with 10 or more fantasy points, led by Brandon Myers with 19. And while a few disappointments (Owen Daniels, Jimmy Graham) are inevitable, it was still a very good week overall at the position. Let’s see how Week 14 will stack up in our latest edition of the tight end rankings.

WEEK 13 RANKINGS QB | RB | WR | TE | K | DEF
We always thought that Lee Smith was just a burly former reliever who is third on MLB’s all-time saves list. But apparently, there’s another Lee Smith, and this one plays tight end for the Buffalo Bills. We know this because he was one of the 12 tight ends to score a touchdown in Week 12. So it must have been a great week for the position for fantasy owners, right? Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Despite all the scores, only six tight ends had double-digit fantasy points, and only three had more than 10 points. And we’d be willing to bet that not a whole lot of fantasy owners are employing many of the tight ends who scored last week.
Here are eight of the 11 tight ends who scored, and in parenthesis will be the number of catches they had before Week 12: Lee Smith (two), Gary Barnidge (three), David Thomas (four), Matt Spaeth (four), Niles Paul (six), Charles Clay (seven), Anthony McCoy (nine), and Jordan Cameron (12). Hopefully we’ll see some of the big boys step up and contribute in Week 13.
