With nearly five weeks of Live Q & As in the books, the number of kicker questions asked can be counted on one hand. Don’t get us wrong, we get it - kickers are not the glory position in fantasy football, but with all the heart break stories we’ve heard, we can’t help but think that an extra point here or there by your fantasy kicker could turn some of those “Ls” into “Ws.” The good news is that you’re on the right track to making that happen by checking out the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 5 Kicker Rankings. So, let’s get to it.
1. Ryan Longwell (Minnesota Vikings) @ St. Louis
While it didn’t work for the Jets, the Brett Favre experiment is panning out nicely so far for the Vikings (though, we still have to see if Minny experiences a late season melt down) as Minnesota ranks 4th in points scored, averaging 29.5 points per game. The Bruno Boys always state the importance of playing for a high-powered offense when it comes to fantasy kickers, and Longwell meets that requirement. A match-up with the lowly Rams is what propels him to the top spot in week 5.
Point Projection: 14 points
2. Lawrence Tynes (New York Giants) vs. Oakland
The top fantasy kicker through four weeks with 40 fantasy points, Tynes would have even more if he could connect on all of the opportunities the Giants have given him. So far, for the season, Tynes is just 10 of 13 on FG attempts. Still, even if he misses one in week 5, he’ll rack up the fantasy points as the Giants get set to face a Raiders’ team that’s in shambles.

By now certain kickers are solidifying themselves as must-start fantasy football options every week regardless of match-up while others are either underperforming or play on offenses that can’t give them enough opportunities to score. Whatever the reasons for a kicker’s success or failures, it’s become more clear which kickers you want on your roster week to week, which players should be ranked by match ups alone, and which kickers that it’s just best to avoid altogether. However, it’s still pretty early in the season and lots can change (for better and for worse) from now and into the middle of the season. So as always, check out the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 4 Kicker Rankings, to stay informed as these changes occur.
1. Lawrence Tynes (New York Giants) @ Kansas City
Lawrence Tynes came back to earth a bit in week 3 against Tampa Bay and missed a 21 yard FG. He ended up converting 1 FG and 3 extra points. Tynes may have missed a kick but he’s been pretty consistent the last 3 weeks and the Giants offense looks to keep chugging along. The Giants play the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4 which could end up being a huge game for Tynes.

Ahh kickers. Football’s private joke; the under-appreciated; the short time victors; the long-term losers. The truth is, most fantasy football owners don’t put too much stock in them and rightfully so. After all, the Bruno Boys did advise that you wait until the last round to pick up your kicker as there are always plenty of solid options to pick up on a waiver wire later on if needed. Plus, the difference in fantasy points among kickers in a season overall is not that much. However, think about the last time you lost a match by 2,3,or 4 points. Maybe you lost a playoff slot, a fantasy Super Bowl. Maybe it just made you so mad you wanted to rip off car doors Hulk-style. Like it or not, kickers are here to stay in fantasy football. So, let the Bruno Boys help you get the most out of the kicker position in 2009.
With week 2 behind us, it’s becoming clearer that this season is no different from the rest. The kicker position is one of the hardest to predict on a week to week basis. One week a kicker can go 2 for 2 with a game winning FG and then the next week miss 2 FGs to lose the game for his team. As the weeks go on, trends will start to reveal who you can rely on and who you can’t, but this early on, you’re bound to get a few surprises. That’s why it’s even more important to pay attention to the factors that can help determine what might make one kicker more valuable than another each week. And, that’s what the Bruno Boys have done once again in our Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 3 Kicker Rankings, helping to give your lineup the best chance this weekend.
1. John Carney (New Orleans Saints) @ Buffalo
What John Carney doesn’t get in FG points, he makes up for with extra points. Carney has remained consistent kicking the ball since week 1 and converted 2 FGs and 6 extra points in week 2 at Philadelphia. If Carney keeps kicking this well, the Saints will have a tough decision when original starting kicker Garrett Hartley returns from suspension. As long as the Saints continue to dominate offensively, Carney will put up good numbers.

In Week 1 of the fantasy football season we saw a 63-yard attempt, top rated kickers performing like bottom tier kickers and bottom tier kickers booting 50+ yard field goals. We also saw the rise of special teams leading to the rise of numerous blocked field goals. All things to keep in mind and yet just another example of why we love this game so much, one season is never the same as the other. The game is always evolving. When it comes to evaluating kickers after the first week though, it’s important not to jump the gun and to stick to the basics until you have more information to go on. After all it’s only been a week. You don’t want to just evaluate how a kicker performed but how well team offenses and defenses did in order to give him the chance to perform in the first place. That being said, this early in the season the best way to choose which kicker to play is through the same logical list of checkpoints you should always use every week. Strength of team offense; good or bad match up; and just how good is the kicker himself.
As the season goes on, there will be more information to help us know which kickers will consistently deliver and those who should ride the pine. Here is the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 2 Kicker Rankings to help you and your fantasy lineup.
1. Ryan Longwell (Minnesota Vikings) @ Detroit
Ryan Longwell had a great start to the season during Minnesota’s victory against Cleveland. He kicked 2 FG and 4 extra points, finishing with 10 points overall. Longwell is a very good kicker on a high powered offense which should continue to score lots of points. Look for him to continue scoring big in Week 2 against the Lions, who gave up 45 points last week.

At the start of the fantasy season, deciding which kicker to start or pick up is usually based on 3 criteria - player history, team offense and match ups. Traditionally, a strong-legged kicker who has been consistently accurate and plays on a good offense is usually a good pick for solid fantasy numbers. However, match ups can be just as important, if not more. How good is the opposing team’s defense? Are they kicking in a dome or open field? If you’re wondering where you’ll find the time to answer these questions, don’t worry. The Bruno Boys have done it for you. Here are the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week1 Kicker Rankings.

Aww, kickers, everyone’s favorite fantasy football position. Ok, we know that’s a bold face lie, but trust us, when we tell you that your kicker can have as big an impact as anyone else on your roster when it comes to your fantasy season. Don’t believe us? Well, just think back to all those one-point losses you’ve endured over your fantasy career, and we know you’ll see otherwise. So, take a couple of minutes and read through our analysis of all 32 NFL kickers, starting with No. 1 Stephen Gostkowski. Read on to find out where the rest of the kickers rank in our download-able fantasy football cheat sheets rankings.
::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF AUGUST 15, 2009::
TIER 1
1. Stephen Gostkowski – New England Patriots (Bye: 8)
Improving on an already impressive 2007 season, Gostkowski led the league in scoring in 2008. His extra point stats experienced a big drop due to Tom Brady’s injury, but he was able to make up for it with 16 more field goal opportunities. The season ended with him making 36 out of 40 FG (10 from 40-yards or more) netting fantasy owners a sweet 155 points.
With the return of a healthy Brady in 2009, the offense should return to dominating the field, which translates to lots of scoring opportunities for Gostkowski. With a stellar leg and a spot on one of the most dynamic teams in the league, expect him to surpass his numbers from last season putting him atop all other fantasy football kickers at No. 1.
