::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF FEBRUARY 2, 2012::

We have to wait until the calendar turns to February for more NFL football, not counting the Pro Bowl of course, and two of the best offenses and quarterbacks in the league will be on display with the New England Patriots and New York Giants play each other in the Super Bowl for the second time in recent years.

Since it looks likely to be a high-scoring affair at Lucas Oil Stadium, neither one of the defenses has a lot of appeal to fantasy owners looking to secure a victory in their playoff leagues.

Before we get going with our rankings for the Conference Championship games, here is a refresher on how to use our “Bruno Boys Star System” for ranking team defenses.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF JANUARY 21, 2012::

Even in today’s quarterback-driven NFL, defense still seems to be an important factor in winning championships. Fantasy football owners have two of the top three defenses in ESPN leagues from the regular season (San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens) available this week, and two more (New York Giants, New England Patriots) that have looked good thus far in the playoffs.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF JANUARY 13, 2012::

Three of the eight defenses in action this weekend where among the top five scoring fantasy defenses during the regular season, and another (the Green Bay Packers) forced a boatload of turnovers. There is again a fairly fine line between the “haves” and the “have-nots” this week, and only a couple of the available options look like sure-fire top tier defenses with little downside.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF JANUARY 6, 2012::

Playoff time is here in the NFL, and some very good matchups are coming, including a chance at redemption for a couple teams of games as both of Saturday’s game will be rematch of a regular season game when the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Houston Texans and the Detroit Lions get a second crack at the New Orleans Saints.

Out of the eight defenses available to fantasy football owners this week, five finished the regular season in the top 12 in fantasy points, and there is a definite line between the best options and those that should avoided.

Here’s a quick reminder of how to use the Bruno Boys Team Defense Star System to help you select a team defense for the critical week ahead.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2011::

Week 17 will bring an end to yet another NFL regular season, and an official end to the fantasy football season for leagues that last through Week 17. Most of the defenses fantasy owners have relied on all season have favorable situations this week, but a couple teams that have nothing to gain from a victory this Sunday (Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans) may play a lot of backups so as to save their starters for the playoffs.
Some defensive units that have had ups and downs this season but look likely to finish 2011 strongly include the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins. That said, fantasy owners should not get creative if they have a sure-fire option available to them for Week 17.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF DECEMBER 24, 2011::

Week 16 of the NFL schedule is now upon us, and it is championship week in a lot of fantasy football leagues. At this stage, those who advanced this far have no need to get creative in search for starting defenses, especially since many of the best options have good matchups this week.

That said, owners who are looking for their starting defense in this critical week can find some good options beyond the top tier of usual suspects. Of note, the Washington Redskins, Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs have some upside potential this week and could help crown a champion in some leagues.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF DECEMBER 17, 2011::

Week 15 is obviously a big week in fantasy football, as it is either the second week of the playoffs in leagues where the playoffs started last week or the first week of the postseason in leagues that use Week 17. Now is not the time to get creative with a starting defense, and many of the top options from the entire season are usable this week. Among the notable defenses with favorable matchups include the Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons. Some others that have upped their performance lately are startable this week as well, like the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.

::RANKINGS UPDATED AS OF DECEMBER 10, 2011::

Week 14 is a critical week in fantasy football, as the playoffs are ready to roll in most leagues and it is the final week of the regular season in those leagues that use Week 17. The defenses owners have relied upon all season can be thought of highly once again this week. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers all find favorable circumstances this week. Those who are in search of a starting defense other than those “names” can find suitable options as well. The Seattle Seahawks in particular have a matchup to exploit in Week 14, and the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots could be worth taking a chance on in what could be beneficial situations. .
