After shipping off Darius Slay in the offseason, the Lions fill the big need at cornerback with Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah. Okudah has great range, tackles and is proficient in the run game. Okudah has shutdown talent and will play the Stephon Gilmore role in the Matt Patricia’s defense.
The Lions finished last in pass defense in 2019 with just seven interceptions and allowing 33 touchdown passes. They also allowed a league-worst 4,551 passing yards and their 28 sacks were second worst to Miami, which contributed to the abysmal numbers against the pass. Together with Desmond Trufant, Okudah will hold down the edge for the Lions.
Okudah will help out greatly and is a slam dunk for Lions GM Bob Quinn, but much still needs to happen for the Lions’ defense to make big strides to becoming more than just a streaming defense in 2020. Patricia has slowly brought in personnel he was familiar with in New England but we have yet to see it translate to a formidable defense.
