The 49ers move up in the draft with a trade with the Houston Texans prior to the start of the draft and select North Dakota State QB Trey Lance. Even though he has just 17 starts, Lance has proven himself on tape and in his two pro days as a desirable QB on draft day. This puts into question what will happen at quarterback as the Niners could use Jimmy Garoppolo as a bridge to Lance or deal him after the draft.
This is the first time since 1999 that quarterbacks have gone 1-2-3 to start the NFL Draft.
Bruno Boys Hot Take
For the Niners to move up in the draft it had to be for a quarterback with a high ceiling. That was Trey Lance. Given his dual threat capability, his big and accurate arm, Lance plays with a chip on his shoulder. He can learn from Jimmy Garoppolo and be that insurance QB in the depth chart and if Jimmy G gets hurt again, the Niners have the future set.
Lance would give the Niners a deadly backfield with all of their running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and of course, tight end George Kittle.
